Georgia Southern beat App State twice last season, including a bowl-game blowout in Birmingham, and the two Sun Belt sides run it back this fall with plenty to prove on both sidelines.

Georgia Southern has beaten this exact opponent twice in the last calendar year, including a decisive bowl win, and there's no reason to think that trend reverses just because App State has new faces. The Eagles' program has been steadier under Helton, four straight bowl trips and counting. App State's overhaul is a real threat long-term, but a roster full of 66 newcomers finding chemistry against a team that already has their number is a tough opening ask.

App State
  • highest-rated transfer class in program history
  • 35 portal newcomers add instant talent
  • clear revenge motive after two 2025 losses
  • defense ranked among Sun Belt's worst last year
  • massive roster turnover risks early chemistry issues
  • enters as the team that's lost this matchup twice running
Georgia Southern
  • swept App State in 2025, including a bowl blowout
  • four straight bowl trips under Clay Helton
  • Arnold's 1,000-yard ground game returns as a weapon
  • starting quarterback job still unresolved
  • top QB option carries a heavy recent injury history
  • Helton's overall record a modest 20-19 the last three years

This one carries some baggage. Georgia Southern closed out 2025 by knocking off App State in the regular season and then again in the Birmingham Bowl, a 29-10 finish that made the Eagles the first team in college football history to sweep the same opponent in the regular season and a bowl game in the same year. Friday, October 30 is App State's first shot at flipping that script, and it comes with a new coaching staff still trying to find its footing in Boone.

Georgia Southern's biggest question mark heading into the year has nothing to do with App State at all — it's who lines up under center. Clay Helton is choosing between Max Johnson, a seventh-year transfer with real starting pedigree from his LSU days but a brutal recent injury history, and Turner Helton, the coach's son, who's now in year two of the program. Whoever wins that job will be doing it against a Sun Belt schedule that includes a rival gunning for payback.

App State, meanwhile, is remaking itself from the ground up. Second-year coach Dowell Loggains brought in a transfer class that's been called the highest-rated in program history and the top-ranked class in Sun Belt history, with 66 newcomers on the roster. That's the kind of overhaul that can pay off in a hurry or take time to gel, and this game will be an early data point on which one it is.

The defensive side is where App State really has work to do. Last year's unit was among the worst in the Sun Belt, and Georgia Southern's ground game exposed it as much as anyone — OJ Arnold ran for 152 yards in the bowl rematch alone and finished the season over 1,000 yards. If App State's retooled defense hasn't taken a real step forward by late October, this could look a lot like last December did.

Helton has now taken Georgia Southern to a bowl in four straight seasons, a first for the program, and beating App State twice last year was the signature moment of that run. App State wants nothing more than to end that streak of embarrassment at the source. Whichever roster question gets answered first — Georgia Southern's quarterback battle or App State's defensive rebuild — probably decides which team is doing the celebrating this time around.
