TLDR: West Virginia has given up 86 points in 2 weeks and lost 2 straight Big 12 games. Next up on Saturday, October 10, in Morgantown, the most prolific passer in Arizona history.

Arizona's offense runs through Noah Fifita, the program's career passing leader. West Virginia's defense allowed 41 and 45 points in its 2 Big 12 losses, and the Iowa State loss turned on 10 penalties and a late fumble. Arizona's home game against Cincinnati wasn't in the data at publication, and both teams have injuries in the skill-position groups. Both are still looking for their first conference win.

Arizona Wildcats
  • Fifita threw 297 yards, 4 TDs vs Washington State
  • Came back from a halftime deficit to win in Pullman
  • Faces a WVU defense that allowed 41 and 45
  • Lost its one big road test, 28-17 at BYU
  • WR Richardson and TE Rusk out, targets thinned
  • S Austin out for the season, secondary thinner
West Virginia Mountaineers
  • Offense put up 42 in Big 12 road game
  • Home in Morgantown after 2-game road swing
  • Won 38-27 at Virginia in September
  • Defense allowed 41 and 45 in 2 straight losses
  • 10 penalties, late fumble cost the Iowa State game
  • RB Talley questionable with hamstring

This game comes down to the quarterback against the secondary. Noah Fifita broke Arizona's career passing record in the 42-17 win over Northern Illinois. Against Washington State he threw for 297 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Wildcats came back from a halftime deficit to win 34-24. He is a senior, and Brent Brennan has built the offense around him. West Virginia's defense lost to Oklahoma State 41-24 at home, then gave up 45 at Iowa State. Fifita's arm against a Mountaineers back end that has stopped stopping people is the whole story.

There's a gap in the Arizona form below. The Wildcats hosted Cincinnati on Saturday, October 3, while West Virginia was in Ames, and that result isn't in our numbers yet. The 3-1 record and 2-game win streak are as of this writing, before that Big 12 home game is counted. Whatever happened against the Bearcats will set the mood in Tucson heading into the trip east. It will also show how much Fifita can do with a receiver room missing WR G. Richardson and TE C. Rusk.

For West Virginia, the Iowa State loss stung because the offense did its part. The Mountaineers scored 42, tied it 28-28 after 3 quarters and went ahead with about 5 minutes left. Then Iowa State drove for the winning score, and WVU fumbled with under a minute to go. Rich Rodriguez didn't hold back afterward: "We were too undisciplined and not coached well enough to give us a chance. Penalties were atrocious." WVU had 10 penalties that day.

The season so far tells you how this could go. West Virginia went 3-0 in non-conference play, including 38-27 at Virginia. Since Big 12 play started, though, the defense has been the problem. Arizona has handled the teams it should beat and lost its one real road test, 28-17 at BYU. Neither team has a Big 12 win yet, so someone gets their first one in Morgantown.

The injury news cuts both ways. West Virginia RB C. Talley tweaked his hamstring and is undecided for Arizona, and the Mountaineers need their run game to keep Fifita off the field. Arizona is down 2 pass catchers, and S D. Austin is out for the season. That thins a secondary that has to slow down a WVU offense that just put up 42 in a Big 12 road game.

The forecast looks like ideal football weather: 77 degrees, partly cloudy, almost no wind, and a 2% chance of rain at Milan Puskar Stadium. Nothing in the conditions will slow either passing game. Arizona also has a long trip east for an early-window kickoff. Two defenses that have been giving up points, a record-setting quarterback and a home team trying to stop a slide make for a lively noon game, even if it doesn't decide the conference.
