TLDR: Texas A&M started 2-0 and has lost 2 straight since. Arkansas just snapped a 12-game FBS losing streak. One of these 2-2 teams leaves College Station on Saturday, October 3 feeling like the season has turned, and the other goes back to the film room.

Texas A&M and Arkansas are both 2-2 as of the last weekend of September, with A&M 0-2 in the SEC after losses to Kentucky and LSU. Arkansas just ended a 12-game FBS losing streak by beating Tulsa, but in year 1 under Ryan Silverfield it has lost to its 2 strongest opponents by 4 touchdowns or more. Kyle Field and the Aggies' extra talent explain why they're big favorites. Whether that holds up depends on whether Marcel Reed's offense, which put up 27 points in 2 SEC games, can move the ball against league defenses again.

Arkansas Razorbacks
  • Ended the 12-game FBS skid with a 34-6 win over Tulsa
  • Defense held Tulsa to 6 points
  • A&M offense scored 27 total in its 2 SEC games
  • Lost to Utah and Georgia by a combined 61 points
  • First-year staff making its first SEC road trip
  • Scored 27 total in the 2 Power 4 losses
Texas A&M Aggies
  • At home at Kyle Field after 2 road/league losses
  • Scored 98 in its 2 non-conference wins
  • Reed, Craver and Bethel-Roman are back as the core of the offense
  • Scored 6 points at LSU
  • 0-2 in the SEC after the Kentucky loss
  • New play-caller in Wiggins still finding answers

Start with the Aggies, because their September has gone the wrong way. Mike Elko's team, in his third year, put up 50 on Missouri State and 48 on Arizona State. Then SEC play started: a 31-21 loss to Kentucky and a 35-6 beating at LSU, which leaves A&M 0-2 in the league as of this weekend. Marcel Reed is back at quarterback with Mario Craver and Ashton Bethel-Roman as his top targets. Holmon Wiggins has moved up to offensive coordinator after Collin Klein left for Kansas State. So far that offense has shredded the non-conference opponents and stalled against SEC defenses.

Arkansas is in year 1 under Ryan Silverfield, and the first month has looked like it. The Hogs opened with a 31-14 win over North Alabama. Then Utah beat them 43-10 and Georgia beat them 45-17. On the Tuesday after the Georgia loss, athletic director Hunter Yurachek was talking publicly about fan frustration and asking for patience. Then came a 34-6 win over Tulsa that ended the program-record 12-game losing streak against FBS teams. The oddsmakers aren't treating that as a turning point. Arkansas is a 2-touchdown-plus underdog.

The number makes sense on paper. Kyle Field is a hard place to play, and Arkansas's two games against Power 4 opponents ended in 33- and 28-point losses. The other side of it: A&M has scored 27 points combined in its 2 SEC games, and a team that can't finish drives against league defenses has to prove it can win by 3 scores before anyone should assume it.

This is also the first home SEC game for the Aggies after two straight league losses, and Kyle Field won't be patient. If Reed and the offense come out slow again against an Arkansas defense that just held Tulsa to 6, the pressure builds fast. Nobody has any momentum in this game. What's there is a chance to steady things, and the Aggies need it more, because a 2-3 start that includes an 0-3 SEC record would be tough to recover from.

The early forecast for College Station is a clear 72 degrees with an 11 mph wind and a 42% chance of rain, so it's worth checking again closer to kickoff. With both offenses looking shaky against good defenses lately, a wet night would push the game toward whichever team takes care of the ball. Arkansas has turned it into a matchup of 2-2 teams. Texas A&M still has to show that the gap between the two is as wide as the line says.
