This is about as tough an early litmus test as a new coach can get. Silverfield takes over an Arkansas program that fired Sam Pittman five games into last season and brings a wholesale roster overhaul with him, reportedly more than 40 incoming transfers as he tries to rebuild the Hogs in a hurry. The quarterback race between returning freshman KJ Jackson and Memphis transfer AJ Hill was still the headline storyline of the offseason, and however it shakes out, whoever's under center will be doing it on the road against a ranked-caliber defense in his second or third career start.
Utah, meanwhile, isn't rebuilding anything. Devon Dampier is back after a season that produced 41.2 points and 482.9 yards per game, both top-4 nationally, plus 835 rushing yards and 24 touchdown passes with only five picks. He battled a sports hernia for stretches of 2025 and is reportedly healthy now, which is a scary proposition for a Big 12 that already couldn't slow him down. Morgan Scalley steps in for Kyle Whittingham, who left for Michigan after 21 seasons, but Utah didn't blow up the program to do it — Scalley was the heir apparent, and continuity was the whole point of the hire.

The one real question mark for the Utes is the offensive line, which returns just a fraction of its 2025 starters, and Dampier's ability to extend plays with his legs will matter more than ever if that group needs time to gel early in the year. Arkansas' path to pulling this off runs through forcing turnovers and hoping its transfer-heavy defense flashes faster than its offense finds an identity — a tall order for a staff that's still figuring out its own depth chart in September.
