Auburn Tigers at Ole Miss Rebels

TLDR: Auburn has already gone into Athens and won this year, so the Tigers know how to steal a road game. Now they have to do it at No. 7 Ole Miss, a week after LSU walked through them in Jordan-Hare.

Ole Miss, ranked No. 7, hosts Auburn after both lost their last game: the Rebels 34-27 at Texas on a last-play interception, and Auburn 38-17 at home to LSU after being outgained 552-271. The Rebels have the better offense and better results against common opponents, but Chambliss's 3-turnover day at Texas gives Auburn an opening. Auburn has won at Georgia this year and didn't turn the ball over against LSU, and it will likely need Ole Miss to give it a few short fields to pull the upset.

Auburn Tigers
  • Already won on the road at Georgia, 27-24
  • No turnovers in the LSU loss
  • Held Vanderbilt to 15 points
  • Outgained 552-271 by LSU last week
  • WR E. Smith, RB N. Davenport out since September
  • Down 31-10 at half against LSU
Ole Miss Rebels
  • Beat LSU 32-24 in Oxford
  • No injuries listed
  • Scored 52 at Vanderbilt, 31 against Missouri

These are 2 teams coming off losses that went very differently. Ole Miss went to Austin and lost 34-27 to Texas. Trinidad Chambliss was responsible for 3 turnovers, and the last one was an interception in the end zone as time expired with the Rebels driving to tie. Auburn never got that close to LSU. The Tigers were down 31-10 at halftime after LSU scored on 5 of their first 6 possessions, and they lost 38-17 at home.

The numbers from Auburn's loss look bad. LSU outgained them 552-271, and Sam Leavitt threw for 387 yards and 3 touchdowns while running for another score. Byrum Brown went 15-of-24 for 160 yards, and his longest play was a 34-yard touchdown run. Auburn didn't turn the ball over all day, and they still lost by 21. The coach summed it up after the game: "We didn't effectively move the ball offensively," and the defense didn't force turnovers or tackle well either. Auburn has also played without WR E. Smith and RB N. Davenport since mid-September, so the offense hasn't had much depth to lean on.

Oddsmakers have Ole Miss as a double-digit favorite at home, and that matches how the season has gone. The Rebels are 5-2 and have scored 52 and 31 in their last 2 home-or-road wins. Auburn is 4-3 and has topped 27 points just once in its last 4 games. The Rebels also have the better common-opponent results this year, and that's where this matchup gets interesting.

Ole Miss beat LSU 32-24 in Oxford, and that same LSU team just beat Auburn by 21. Ole Miss beat Vanderbilt 52-17 on the road, while Auburn needed everything it had to beat the Commodores 21-15 at home. But Florida beat both of them: it hung 52 on Ole Miss in Gainesville and needed 44 to get past Auburn at Jordan-Hare. Auburn has looked more stable than Ole Miss against at least 1 good offense this year. And the 27-24 win at Georgia proves Auburn can win on the road against a good SEC team.

For Ole Miss, it comes down to the quarterback. Chambliss is the reason the Rebels can score with anybody, and he's also the reason they lost in Austin. Texas forced 3 turnovers from him, and Raleek Brown ran for 157 yards against the Ole Miss defense. If the Rebels give Auburn short fields, Auburn doesn't need to move the ball 70 yards at a time. That matters, because LSU showed Auburn can't really do that right now.

Saturday, October 31 looks like a quiet weather day in Oxford: 75 degrees, cloudy, 4 mph of wind and a 12% chance of rain. Neither offense will have the weather as an excuse. Auburn has to keep doing what it did against LSU, protect the ball, and somehow get stops. Ole Miss has to avoid giving away a game it should control. Both teams are 2 losses into conference play or worse, so the loser's SEC hopes get a lot thinner.
