This one is really two experiments colliding. Alex Golesh takes his first Auburn team on the road against a Power 4 crowd after replacing Hugh Freeze, who went 15-19 and was let go after a Kentucky loss last November. Golesh didn't come alone — he brought Byrum Brown, his USF quarterback who set 15 program records and started 32 games for him, along with four of USF's top five pass-catchers from a year ago. Tennessee, meanwhile, still hasn't named its starting quarterback as of this preview, with redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and early enrollee Brandon Faizon dueling it out into fall camp.
The bigger swing for the Vols might be on the other side of the ball. Josh Heupel moved on from longtime defensive coordinator Tim Banks and hired Jim Knowles, who built defenses at Ohio State and Oklahoma State, to try to get Tennessee's D playing at the level of its skill-position talent. Auburn's calling card is its own defense — linebacker Xavier Atkins racked up 17 tackles for loss and 9 sacks a year ago, giving Golesh a proven disruptor to lean on while his new offense finds its footing.

Whichever team settles in faster on defense probably controls this game. Tennessee still has real weapons regardless of who's throwing them the ball — DeSean Bishop returns as one of the SEC's top backs, and Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley both have 1,000-yard receiving upside. Auburn's counter is continuity: Golesh, Brown and the receivers who followed him from Tampa already speak the same offensive language, which matters against a defense installing a new scheme of its own.

Tennessee gets the benefit of a home crowd and the O-line depth to make whoever wins the quarterback battle's life easier, with David Sanders, Wendell Moe Jr., Jesse Perry, transfer Ory Williams and center Sam Pendleton forming a group with real top-10 upside up front. Auburn's job is to prove its own rebuild isn't just a talent reload but a program that can go on the road and compete with a ranked-caliber SEC East team in Year 1 of the Golesh era.
