Auburn arrives with a pattern. Alex Golesh's 1st Tigers team is 3-1 on the season, and 2 of those 3 wins came by a single score: 17-16 over Baylor in Atlanta and 21-15 over Vanderbilt at home on homecoming. The Southern Miss game was the only easy afternoon. The Florida loss showed that when the offense gets going, as it did in a 16-play, 150-yard stretch that tied the game at 17 before halftime, Auburn can go score for score. It just hasn't done that for 4 quarters yet.
That makes the Florida tape the one to watch this week. Auburn put up 39 on an SEC defense, and the defense that let Florida score 44 is also the one that held Vanderbilt to 15 a week later. Which version shows up in Knoxville matters more than anything the Tigers did against Southern Miss.
For Tennessee, it's a turnaround week. The Vols have to come back from a physical, emotional loss to Texas and figure out how to run the ball again against a team that has been bending all year without breaking often. If the ground game gets back on track, Brandon gets to play from ahead of the chains. If it doesn't, this looks a lot like last Saturday, with the Tennessee defense doing all the work.
The forecast shouldn't be a big factor: 76 degrees and cloudy, a 36% chance of rain and almost no wind. Neither team plays before this, so both get a full week to prepare. Heupel gets 7 days to fix the run game, and Golesh gets 7 days to fix the protection.
