Vanderbilt football doesn't look like Vanderbilt football anymore, and that's the whole story of this opener. A year removed from a 10-3 season, a No. 15 final ranking and a Heisman finalist under center, Clark Lea hands the offense to five-star true freshman Jared Curtis for his very first live snaps. Curtis, a Nashville kid who flipped from a Georgia commitment, has the inside track after Pavia went undrafted and moved on. Austin Peay counters with a QB who actually turned down bigger jobs to stick around — Chris Parson, an FCS All-UAC caliber passer who chose to run it back at Austin Peay instead of chasing a Power Conference roster spot.
This is Vanderbilt's lone FCS opponent on the 2026 slate, and the roster gap is enormous even before you factor in that the Commodores are coming off the best stretch in program history. Lea says this is the deepest two-deep he's had in six years running the program, which matters a lot in a game where backups are likely to see real snaps by the fourth quarter. Austin Peay isn't nothing, though — the Governors went 7-4 in the UAC last season with seven All-Conference selections, the most in the league, and head coach Jeff Faris just signed a five-year extension and brought in one of FCS football's better transfer classes.

Curtis was ranked outside the top half of returning SEC quarterbacks in post-spring rankings, which is really just a reflection of zero game snaps rather than a knock on his talent — he was one of the most coveted arms in the 2026 class. Austin Peay, for its part, isn't just showing up to cash a check; Faris brought in Gavin Spurrier, grandson of Steve Spurrier, to run the passing game specifically to modernize an offense built around Parson's arm.
