TLDR: Bowling Green started the season scoring 7 points a week and has now scored 62 across its last 2 games. Ball State has been heading the other way for a month, and the two meet in a MAC game on Saturday, October 17 that is more about which slide is real than about who's good.

Ball State has lost 4 straight since beating Stony Brook, allowing 26 or more in every game, and is missing receivers I. Thacker and D. Talbert. Bowling Green started 0-3 in this stretch, scoring single digits each time, then beat Miami (OH) and Sacramento State. The question is whether the Falcons' offense has really turned around or only looked good against weak opponents. Early forecasts show cold, wind and drizzle in Ohio.

Ball State Cardinals
  • Put up 41 on Stony Brook in its only win
  • Scored 24 on Toledo, best output of the skid
  • Allowed 26+ points in 4 straight games
  • WRs Thacker and Talbert both out, no timetable
  • Scored 15 or fewer in 3 of last 4
Bowling Green Falcons
  • Scored 62 points over its last 2 games
  • Snapped a 5-game home losing streak vs Sacramento State
  • Won a 1-score road game at Miami (OH)

This one is about the Bowling Green offense more than anything else. Across the first 3 games of the stretch the Falcons scored 7 at Nebraska, 7 at Iowa State and 6 at home against South Florida, which is 20 points in 3 games. Then they won 24-20 at Miami (OH), their highest-scoring game of the season to that point, and followed it with 38 on Sacramento State. Ball State's defense has given up 26 or more in each of its last 4 games, so this is the right opponent to show whether the Falcons have actually figured something out.

The Cardinals have been worse since Stony Brook. That 41-17 home win on September 12 is still their only one, and Liberty, Kent State, Toledo and Northwestern have all won comfortably since. Northwestern came in at 3-1 and favored by more than 5 touchdowns, and the 45-14 final wasn't far off that. Ball State's offense has scored 15, 13, 24 and 14 during the skid. It has done that without 2 receivers: I. Thacker and D. Talbert are both out with undisclosed injuries and no return date.

Bowling Green has its own personnel problems. Running back K. Baldwin sat out the Miami win with an undisclosed injury, and receiver A. Clay has been shut down for the season. Even so, the Falcons came out of the Sacramento State game on a 2-game winning streak. Going into that game they had lost 5 straight at home going back to last season. They beat the Hornets 38-10, so for the first time in a while, coming back to Doyt L. Perry Stadium isn't a problem.

Look past the records and both teams are 1 good week away from a different story. Bowling Green's 2 wins came against a Miami team it beat by 4 and an FCS opponent. Its 3 losses were to 2 Power 4 teams and a South Florida team that held it to 6 at home. Ball State's 4 straight losses came to 2 decent MAC teams, a Liberty team that scored 51, and a Big Ten opponent. Neither of these teams has beaten a good opponent yet, and Saturday's winner will have beaten a bad one.

The early forecast for Bowling Green calls for 40 degrees, light drizzle and 15 mph wind. That is a week-out read and will change, but if it holds, it's bad news for an offense that has averaged 15 points a game this past month. Ball State can't afford a game where the ball is wet and its receiver depth is already thin. Bowling Green can win a slow, run-heavy game, which is how it started this 2-game streak at Miami.
