TLDR: Ball State has won 2 straight as of now. UMass has lost 4 in a row and is running out of ways to explain a 4-0 start that keeps getting further away. They meet on a Wednesday in Amherst in November, which is exactly where the MAC likes to put the games it doesn't want you thinking about.

Ball State has won 2 straight to get to 2-2 in the MAC as of now, while UMass has dropped 4 in a row since a 4-0 start and just got run off the field at UConn. The Minutemen's season hinges on Pop Watson's ankle and a defense that has given up 35 or more twice this month. Ball State is still playing without 2 of its pass catchers. No line has posted yet.

Ball State Cardinals
  • Won 2 straight, 32 and 34 points scored
  • 2-2 in MAC, still in the league race
  • WR Talbert and TE Coonrod both out indefinitely
  • Lost 45-14 to Northwestern this month
  • Bowling Green win came by a single point
Massachusetts Minutemen
  • Watson played through the ankle and threw a TD at UConn
  • Lost to Miami (OH) by 1 and Buffalo by 7
  • Home game after an 11-day break

For UMass this starts and ends at quarterback. William "Pop" Watson III has been fighting an ankle injury and was listed questionable going into the UConn game. He played anyway and threw a short touchdown to Curtis Kimmons IV in the fourth quarter of a 35-16 loss. That is good news for availability. It is not proof the ankle is fine, and an 11-day break before Wednesday, November 4 is the best thing on the UMass schedule right now.

The UConn game went wrong in all 3 phases. Kalieb Osborne accounted for 3 touchdowns, Cyncir Bowers ran for 131 yards on 15 carries, and Shamar Porter blocked a punt and fell on it in the end zone to make it 28-3 in the third quarter. With lead back J. Washington shut down for the season, Justin Williams-Thomas is carrying more of the UMass ground game. He punched in a 6-yard score late against the Huskies. The board hasn't posted a number on this one yet.

Ball State spent the first half of October looking finished. The Cardinals lost to Kent State, Toledo and Northwestern, and the Wildcats beat them 45-14. Then they won 32-31 at Bowling Green and beat Sacramento State 34-17 in Muncie on homecoming weekend. Being in the race as of today counts for something in a MAC season where Ball State sits 2-2 in league play.

Look past the streaks and these teams aren't that far apart. UMass lost to Miami (OH) by 1 and at Buffalo by 7, so the 1-3 conference record makes the Minutemen look worse than they've played in league games. Ball State's 2-game run started with a 1-point escape. The Cardinals have scored 32 and 34 the last 2 times out after topping out at 24 in the 3 losses before that, and nobody knows yet whether that's real or just Bowling Green and an FCS opponent.

Ball State is getting by without 2 pass catchers. WR D. Talbert has been out since late September and TE C. Coonrod since the Northwestern game, with no return dates for either. UMass gave up 38 to Eastern Michigan and 35 to UConn, so that defense might not make the Cardinals miss them. A 4-0 start is now a 4-4 team that needs 2 more wins to reach bowl eligibility, and a home date with a 3-5 club is about as good a chance as UMass gets.
