TLDR: It's the first Big 12 game of October between 2 teams that are both 1-0 in league play, and one of them walks out of Tempe with a real case for the conference race. Baylor finally has its quarterback back. Arizona State has had 2 weeks to get ready for him.

Baylor (3-1) and Arizona State (2-1) are both 1-0 in the Big 12, and they meet in Tempe with the Sun Devils favored by a little more than a field goal. The Bears just got DJ Lagway back from an ankle injury, while Arizona State comes off an open week after beating Kansas in London. Rest and home field favor the Sun Devils. Lagway's return and the chance that Arizona State's 48-20 loss at Texas A&M exposed a real ceiling favor Baylor.

Baylor Bears
  • Lagway back, 2 TDs in return vs Colorado
  • Held Colorado to 13 in Big 12 opener
  • Won 2 games without its starting QB
  • Lagway 1 game removed from ankle injury
  • Short week out west after playing Sept 26
  • Wins came vs Prairie View, La Tech, Colorado
Arizona State Sun Devils
  • Open week after London, fully rested at home
  • Beat Kansas 24-17 in first Big 12 game
  • Lost 48-20 at Texas A&M, only real test
  • Unproven against a Power 4 team with a pulse

The football story starts with DJ Lagway. The Florida transfer hurt his ankle in the 17-16 opening loss to Auburn and missed the next 2 games. Baylor won both anyway, 44-3 over Prairie View A&M and 36-19 over Louisiana Tech. Lagway came back against Colorado and threw 2 touchdowns in a 23-13 win in the Big 12 opener. So the Bears that show up in Tempe on Saturday, October 3 are the version with their starter, and that's a different team from the one that spent most of September on the backup plan.

Arizona State has Kenny Dillingham in his 4th season and Cutter Boley at quarterback. September gave the Sun Devils a wide range of results: 70-7 over Morgan State, a 48-20 beating at Texas A&M, then a 24-17 win over Kansas at Wembley Stadium in the first Union Jack Classic. They had no game on September 26, so after a trip to London they've had a full 2 weeks off before Baylor comes to town. Arizona State opens as a field-goal-plus favorite at home.

The schedule difference matters. Baylor played a conference game on the 26th and then has to travel west for a late kickoff in the desert. Arizona State gets its legs back under it at home after an overseas flight and an open week. The forecast calls for 91 degrees, clear skies and wind around 11 mph at Mountain America Stadium, and a Texas team isn't going to be bothered much by the heat.

What we don't know yet is how good either team really is. Baylor's 3 wins came against an FCS team, a Conference USA team and a Colorado team it held to 13 points. Its only game against a Power 4 opponent with some weight to it was the 1-point loss to Auburn, played mostly without Lagway. Arizona State had its one real test in College Station and lost by 28. The Sun Devils steadied in London, but a 7-point win over Kansas doesn't settle much.

Watch how Lagway moves. He's 1 game back from an ankle injury and he'll be facing a defense that has had 2 weeks to scheme for him. If he looks like he did against Colorado, Baylor has the more complete passing game on the field. If the ankle limits him, Arizona State's rest and home crowd become the story. Either way, the winner leaves 2-0 in the Big 12 with October just starting.
