Start with the quarterback, because Boise State's is playing as well as anyone on either sideline. Maddux Madsen went 17-of-21 for 244 yards and 2 touchdowns in the 37-18 win over Utah State, and the Broncos went 89 yards in 6 plays on their opening drive. That's an offense that knows what it wants to do early and does it. Fresno State gets a week to figure out how to make Madsen hold the ball longer than he wants to.

The Broncos' backfield is the thing to watch this week. S. Gaines has been listed questionable with an upper-body injury since late September, and Dylan Riley handled the goal-line work against Utah State with 2 rushing touchdowns. If Gaines is back, Boise gets its depth back. If he isn't, Riley has already shown he can carry it. Fresno State has been without running back B. Ramirez all season, so the Bulldogs built this run without him. There's no board posted on this one yet.

Fresno State's case is its defense. Over its 4-game winning streak, the Bulldogs gave up 3 points to Sacramento State, 10 at San José State, 24 to Rice and 6 at Washington State in the 26-6 Pac-12 opener in Pullman. Holding a conference opponent to 2 field goals' worth of points on the road is a real result, and Boise State hasn't faced a defense playing like that since the opener.

The asterisk on Fresno is the schedule. Its one game against a power opponent was a 39-0 loss at USC, and the offense didn't score. Boise State's own power test, a trip to Oregon, ended 34-27: a loss, but a 1-score one in Eugene. The two openers say more about this matchup than the 4 cupcake-heavy weeks since. One team hung around with a top program on the road. The other got shut out.

Boise State does have something to clean up. Utah State's Javen Jacobs ran for 139 yards on 10 carries, the first 100-yard game of his career, and Jake Ripp's 21-yard pick-six took the pressure off before the Aggies' run game could matter. Fresno State will have watched that tape. The forecast calls for 89 degrees in Fresno, so the Bulldogs' best path is to run the ball, shorten the game and keep Madsen on the sideline.
