Two programs on very different trajectories collide when Boston College heads to Cincinnati for the season opener — one team trying to prove 2-10 was a fluke, the other trying to prove last year's breakthrough wasn't.

Cincinnati's the safer outright pick here — a program with real momentum off a 7-6 season and a Liberty Bowl trip, at home, against a team still finding its footing after a 2-10 year. BC's got new pieces everywhere, and that kind of overhaul rarely clicks in Week 1 on the road. Back the Bearcats to win it outright.

Boston College
  • Dual-threat QB McKenzie adds new dimension to offense
  • Portal RB Dickens ran for 1,000+ yards at Liberty
  • Ted Roof brought real reinforcements to fix defense
  • Coming off 2-10 season, major overhaul underway
  • Defense ranked 128th nationally in total D last year
  • First true road trip to Cincinnati since 1996
Cincinnati
  • Coming off best season under Satterfield at 7-6
  • Big 12 home opener with real momentum
  • New DC Nate Woody brings more aggressive 3-4 scheme
  • Lost Sorsby, a 36-TD producer, to the portal
  • New starter French had a slow start to spring
  • New coordinator and scheme unproven in live games

Cincinnati enters Big 12 play off its best season under Scott Satterfield — a 7-6 finish that got the program over .500 for the first time in his tenure — but the quarterback who got them there is gone. Brendan Sorsby, who racked up 3,380 scrimmage yards and 36 touchdowns last fall, hit the transfer portal, leaving the Bearcats to lean on Georgia Southern transfer JC French, who's lined up as the frontrunner after a shaky start to spring ball. Boston College, meanwhile, is trying to climb out of a 2-10 hole with a retooled QB room of its own, led by dual-threat transfer Mason McKenzie.

The bigger question for BC might not be quarterback — it's the defense. Ted Roof was brought in as the new defensive coordinator specifically to fix a unit that finished 128th nationally in total defense a year ago, and he leaned hard on the portal to bring in help, including Florida State transfer K.J. Sampson up front. Cincinnati has its own defensive shake-up, hiring Nate Woody away from Army to install a 3-4 that should bring more pressure than the old 3-3-5 look.

This is also a series reunion of sorts — Boston College and Cincinnati haven't met on the road in Cincinnati since 1996, and their only meeting since has been a 2020 bowl game the Bearcats won 38-6. With both programs breaking in new pieces on both sides of the ball, there's a real chance this one looks nothing like that blowout, or it looks like exactly that if BC's rebuild isn't further along than expected.

BC's offensive identity is shifting toward the run behind McKenzie, who piled up 662 yards and 6 rushing touchdowns at SVSU, plus Liberty transfer Evan Dickens, who ran for over 1,000 yards and 15 scores last season. That's a completely different look than what BC trotted out during its 2-10 slide, and Cincinnati's revamped front seven under Woody will be seeing it for the first time too.

Cincinnati's home crowd and the head start of an offseason that's produced actual momentum — a winning record, a bowl trip, a Big 12 move — give the Bearcats the edge on paper. But French still has to prove he can do more than manage the game, and BC's defensive overhaul under Roof is the kind of story that could make this closer than the number suggests.
