TLDR: Boston College just picked up its first ACC win, and Georgia Tech just gave up 24 first-half points in Blacksburg. Both sit at 1-2 in the league, and whoever loses at Bobby Dodd on Saturday, October 24 starts to fall out of the ACC conversation.

Boston College (3-3, 1-2 ACC) visits Georgia Tech (2-4, 1-2 ACC) for the Jackets' homecoming, and both teams need the league win. Mason McKenzie is coming off a career-best passing game, and the BC offense will need him without injured RB B. MacCormack III. Georgia Tech's pass defense gave up 180 yards to one Virginia Tech receiver. The game likely comes down to whether the Jackets' second-half pass rush from Blacksburg carries over or the BC passing game finds the same deep shots.

Boston College Eagles
  • McKenzie off career-high 295 yards, 2 TDs
  • Defense held Virginia Tech to 21
  • Has won 3 one-score games this season
  • Lead RB MacCormack III out with shoulder injury
  • Lost only true road game, 25-16 at SMU
  • Slow starts: Pitt scored on its first snap
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
  • Clean injury report
  • Pass rush got 3 second-half sacks at Virginia Tech
  • Beat Duke 28-25 at home
  • Gave up 180 yards to one receiver
  • Trailed Virginia Tech 24-3 at halftime
  • Had only 2 sacks vs FBS before Blacksburg

Start with the Boston College quarterback. Mason McKenzie threw for a career-high 295 yards and 2 touchdowns as BC came back to beat Pittsburgh 27-21. The biggest throw was a 69-yard strike to Landon Wright on the first drive of the second half that put the Eagles up 21-12. It didn't start well. Pitt scored on its very first snap, a 75-yard touchdown pass, and the Eagles spent the opening minutes looking lost. They recovered, and now McKenzie takes that form south.

He'll be doing it without his top back. RB B. MacCormack III is out for an extended stretch with a shoulder injury, so more of the BC offense runs through McKenzie's arm. TE B. Clough has also been listed out with an undisclosed injury, though that report goes back to the SMU week, so check his status again before kickoff. Georgia Tech has nobody on its injury report right now. That's one place the Jackets have an edge in a matchup that could be close.

Georgia Tech's problem is its defense against the deep ball. Virginia Tech's Que'sean Brown caught 5 passes for 180 yards against the Jackets, and the Hokies led 24-3 at halftime on the way to a 34-24 win. Next up is a quarterback who just completed a 69-yarder. If Tech can't keep receivers in front of it, Bobby Dodd gets quiet in a hurry.

The Virginia Tech results are the best comparison available. BC lost 21-14 to the Hokies at home, and Georgia Tech lost 34-24 to them on the road. The Eagles' defense held up better against that team. The Jackets' offense scored more against it. That's roughly how this matchup sets up. BC wins by keeping the score low, like it did against Rutgers, Maine and Pitt, each by a score or less. Georgia Tech needs a game with some scoring in it, like its 28-25 win over Duke or the 44 it put on Mercer.

There was one real positive in Blacksburg for Georgia Tech. The Jackets had 2 sacks against FBS opponents all season before this game, then got 3 on Virginia Tech's first 2 drives of the second half. If that pass rush shows up again, McKenzie gets rushed and the BC offense gets a lot simpler. Away from home BC has been ordinary, losing 25-16 at SMU, and the Eagles haven't won on the road against an FBS team yet this year. The forecast is 73 degrees, clear skies and light wind, so weather shouldn't be a factor.
