The headline here isn't the opponent, it's the quarterback room. Bryson Daily, the guy who broke the FBS single-season rushing-touchdown record for a QB, is gone after finishing his Army commitment. In his place is Cale Hellums, who quietly put up 1,200-plus rushing yards and 15-plus touchdowns of his own in 2025 — making Army the only program in the country with back-to-back seasons of a QB hitting that line. Eight offensive starters are back around him, including 4 established linemen, which is about as smooth a transition as a service academy could ask for.
Bryant, meanwhile, is signing up for a brutal way to start a season. This is the first time in program history the Bulldogs open with 3 straight true road games — Stonehill, then this trip to West Point, then a CAA opener at Hampton. Coach Chris Merritt's group finished 3-9 and 12th in the CAA a year ago, but they've got one thing to hang their hat on: a Week 2 win over UMass last season that was the first FBS scalp in school history. For Army, this is as much about symbolism as football. The Michie Stadium Preservation Project gets its grand opening for this game, and Jeff Monken — entering his 13th season as head coach — would love nothing more than a clean, business-like win to christen it.
