BYU brings back its top two offensive weapons in Bachmeier and Martin, and the league's coaches already tabbed the Cougars as the preseason favorite to win the Big 12. UCF is rebuilding around a new quarterback and a defense that just lost its best pass rusher to the draft. This is a strength-mismatch spot for the Cougars.

BYU
  • Went 12-2, reached first Big 12 title game
  • Bachmeier, Martin both return off huge years
  • Coaches picked BYU as preseason Big 12 favorite
  • Lost DC Jay Hill to Michigan
  • Departed WRs Chase Roberts, Parker Kingston
  • Missed the Playoff two years running
UCF
  • 10 starters, 10 of 12 assistants return
  • Frost calls this group clearly improved
  • Added proven transfer QB Alonza Barnett III
  • Finished 5-7, just 2-7 in Big 12 in 2025
  • Fourth different starting QB in four years
  • Lost DE Malachi Lawrence to the NFL Draft

BYU went 12-2 in 2025, made the program's first Big 12 Championship Game, and closed the year with a Pop-Tarts Bowl win over Georgia Tech. Bear Bachmeier threw for 3,033 yards and 15 touchdowns as a true freshman, and LJ Martin ran for 1,305 yards and 12 scores on his way to Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Both are back. Big 12 coaches just voted BYU the preseason favorite to win the conference in 2026, ahead of media darling Texas Tech.

UCF is a different animal than the team BYU beat 41-21 last November. Scott Frost overhauled almost the entire roster in 2025 and it showed in a 5-7, 2-7 finish. This year 10 starters and 10 of 12 assistants are back, and the Knights went out and grabbed James Madison transfer Alonza Barnett III, a First Team All-Sun Belt QB with CFP experience, to steady a position that's turned over every single year Frost has been in Orlando.

History leans hard toward the Cougars here. BYU owns the series 4-1 and just hung 41 points on this UCF defense in the most recent meeting. The Knights lost defensive end Malachi Lawrence to the NFL Draft, which doesn't help a unit that already had trouble slowing BYU down.

BYU isn't walking in unscathed, though. Defensive coordinator Jay Hill left for Michigan this offseason, and the Cougars also lost receivers Chase Roberts and Parker Kingston to the portal. That's real turnover on a team that's now missed the Playoff two years running despite big regular seasons — the kind of pattern that makes you wonder if this group finds another gear in the moments that matter or comes up just short again.

For UCF, the appeal is that Frost has actual continuity to build on for the first time in a while. Barnett gives the offense a real distributor instead of another midseason scramble at quarterback. Whether that's enough to hang with a team the conference's own coaches picked to win it all remains the question, and this late-October date will start to answer it.
