This one's really about two quarterback rooms in flux. Cal is banking on Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who threw for 3,454 yards and 18 touchdowns as a true freshman in 2025 and stuck around when new head coach Tosh Lupoi flew to Hawaii within 24 hours of taking the job to keep him from bolting for the portal. UNLV's answer is Jackson Arnold, the former five-star who bounced from Oklahoma to Auburn and now gets a fresh start replacing Anthony Colandrea, last year's Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year, who left for the portal.
Lupoi didn't just save his quarterback — he rebuilt around him, hauling in receivers and offensive linemen through the portal and installing 29-year-old Jordan Somerville, fresh off the Buccaneers' staff, as offensive coordinator. The catch is everything else is new too: a defense built largely from scratch under first-year coordinator Michael Hutchings, and a first-year head coach who's never called the shots on a Saturday. UNLV, by contrast, is the stable program here — Dan Mullen is back, the Rebels went 10-4 a year ago, and their offense led the Mountain West in yards and scoring behind a group that returns Jai'Den Thomas, a legitimate Offensive Player of the Year candidate this fall.

The wrinkle for UNLV is staff continuity — offensive coordinator Corey Dennis drew outside interest this offseason, and defensive coordinator Paul Guenther's future has been an open question too. Add in a third straight Mountain West title game loss to Boise State last December, and there's real motivation in that locker room heading into a new season. Cal, meanwhile, is walking into hostile territory for one of its first true road tests under Lupoi, part of a schedule that's going to rack up a lot of miles this fall.

UNLV's floor is higher precisely because the machine already works — Mullen's system, Thomas in the backfield, a home crowd that's used to winning. The variable is just how fast Arnold, who hasn't played meaningful snaps in that scheme, can operate it against a Cal defense that, for all its inexperience, is going to be flying around and forcing new looks. Whichever quarterback settles in faster probably decides this one.
