This is Toledo's first real look at the Mike Jacobs era in front of the home crowd, and it comes loaded with intent. Jacobs built Mercer into a Southern Conference champion before taking this job, and he brought pieces of that roster with him — most notably Andrew Zock, last year's FCS Defensive Player of the Year, now lined up for the Rockets. After an 8-5 season Toledo felt fell short of MAC contention, this is the kind of home date meant to set a tone.
Central Connecticut isn't just a body on the schedule, though. The Blue Devils are two-time defending NEC champions and just punched their second straight trip to the FCS playoffs, beating Mercyhurst 35-28 to clinch the berth. This marks CCSU's ninth straight season taking on an FBS opponent, so the program is no stranger to playing up a level — it's part of the yearly routine now, not a shock trip.
The roster gap is real, though. Toledo returns four experienced starters up front and a running back room the staff has called deep enough that no single back needs to carry the load, while CCSU is coming off a grueling three-week stretch that opens at South Dakota, hosts Fordham, then rolls into Toledo before turning around to face defending FCS national champion Montana State. That's about as tough a scheduling gauntlet as a mid-major FCS program can draw.
