New Mexico hasn't won a conference title since 1964. This year's team, loaded with returning starters, thinks it can end that drought — and it starts with a September opener against a Central Michigan squad still finding its footing under a new coach.

New Mexico brings back 12 starters off a 9-4 season and enters as the league's presumptive favorite, while Central Michigan is breaking in a new head coach and a leaner roster after heavy portal turnover. The talent and continuity gap favors the Lobos even with their own quarterback competition unresolved. Back New Mexico to win its opener at home.

Central Michigan
  • 7-6 bounce-back season in 2025
  • QB Glasser reportedly healthy, working in spring ball
  • New head coach Matt Drinkall replacing McElwain
  • 16 players lost to the portal, thin Power 4 additions
New Mexico
  • 9-4 in 2025, tied for MW regular-season title
  • 12 returning starters, preseason MW favorite
  • Starting QB Layne battling elbow injury, didn't throw in spring
  • Two backup QBs left via the portal

This is a first-ever meeting between these two programs, and the gap in expectations is stark heading into it. New Mexico enters the 2026 season as the consensus Mountain West favorite for the first time in school history, while Central Michigan is still stabilizing after Jim McElwain's retirement handed the program to new head coach Matt Drinkall. One team is chasing history; the other is just trying to figure out who it is.

The Lobos bring back 12 starters off a 2025 team that went 9-4, tied for the Mountain West regular-season title, and averaged 6.9 yards per play. Five starters return on both the offensive and defensive lines, and linebacker Jaxton Eck anchors a defense that should be one of the conference's best. That kind of continuity is rare for a Group of 5 program and it's why Phil Steele has New Mexico leading the league in preseason all-conference selections.

But New Mexico's biggest question mark is at the most important position on the field. Starting QB Jack Layne dealt with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow and didn't throw in spring practice, leaving the job unsettled between Layne, Oregon transfer Luke Moga, and redshirt freshman Toa Fa'avae. Two other quarterbacks left via the portal this offseason, so whoever wins that competition will be doing it with limited depth behind him.

Central Michigan, meanwhile, is a program in transition. The Chippewas went 7-6 in 2025, a solid bounce-back, but one preview flagged that the offense cratered late in the year — not the kind of trend you want carrying into a coaching change. Drinkall inherits a roster that saw 16 players leave through the portal, with only a handful landing at Power 4 programs, and CMU's incoming class is thin on high-level transfer additions.

There's a silver lining for CMU at quarterback: Jadyn Glasser, who flashed in a brief 2025 look before a season-ending injury, is reportedly healthy again and working through spring practice. If he wins the job outright, the Chippewas at least have some continuity of their own at the position — even if the surrounding cast is unproven.

Both quarterback situations remain fluid this far from kickoff, which makes this opener harder to forecast than the talent gap suggests. New Mexico's ceiling is a Mountain West title run; Central Michigan's floor is a rebuilding year under a first-time head coach. Somewhere between those two realities, on Saturday, September 5, this one gets decided.
