This was Georgia Southern's first-ever meeting with in-state neighbor Charleston Southern, and thunderstorms rolling through Statesboro made for a soggy, 89-degree kickoff at Allen E. Paulson Stadium. None of it mattered once the ball was live. The Eagles scored 21 points in the first quarter alone and coasted from there, finishing off a 31-0 shutout that never got within a possession of feeling like a game.

Helton came in having won 9 of his last 10 home openers as a head coach, and Georgia Southern is now 35-7 in openers at Paulson under his watch — a track record that held up again despite an offense that returned literally zero starters from a year ago. Max Johnson, in his 7th season of college ball after transferring in with 24 career starts, got his first look under center for the Eagles and had the benefit of a defense that returned all 6 of its starters and gave Charleston Southern nothing to work with all night.
Charleston Southern, an FCS program under 4th-year coach Gabe Giardina, came in off a Week 0 trip to Lindenwood to open its season, so this wasn't the Buccaneers' first live look of the year — it just didn't show. Getting shut out on the road against a Sun Belt opponent is about as rough a scoreboard as it gets, and the Bucs never found any rhythm against a Georgia Southern front that dictated the game from the opening series.
