App State is the far more established program in this series and just blew Charlotte out on a neutral field a year ago. Charlotte's rebuild is still finding its quarterback, let alone its identity, which makes backing the 49ers to win outright a tough sell this early in Year 2. Lay the price and stick with the Mountaineers at home.

App State enters Year 2 under Dowell Loggains looking to build on a 5-8 debut season that ended with a bowl bid despite a rocky 2-6 mark in Sun Belt play. Charlotte, meanwhile, is trying to climb out of the wreckage of a 1-11 season that was the worst in program history, with Tim Albin now further along in his rebuild after arriving from a MAC title run at Ohio.
The quarterback rooms on both sidelines are still very much in flux. App State brought in Purdue transfer Malachi Singleton to push incumbent Henry Hasselbeck, and the two split first-team reps all spring — a real competition that should sharpen whoever wins it. Charlotte's picture is murkier: it's a three-way battle between Conner Harrell, who was QB1 last year before tearing his ACL, Duke transfer Grayson Loftis, and Western Carolina transfer Cole Gonzales. Harrell flashed real upside in his lone extended look last season, a 26-of-30, 382-yard, 3-touchdown outing against Monmouth, but he's coming off a major injury and nothing is settled.

Charlotte leaned hard into the transfer portal again this offseason, adding more than 20 newcomers on top of last year's overhaul, and Albin says the roster needs have finally been addressed. The results just haven't shown up on the field yet — Charlotte ranked in the 130s nationally in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense, and total defense a year ago, numbers that don't turn around overnight even with fresh faces at receiver, running back and the offensive line.
