For Charlotte, the trend is going the wrong way. The season opened with a 43-41 home loss to The Citadel, an FCS opponent. The 49ers stayed within 5 at App State, and that's the closest they've come since. Then came a 34-7 home loss to Louisiana and a 59-8 beating from Memphis at Jerry Richardson Stadium. That's 15 points in 2 games, and the defense gave up 93 in those same 2.
North Texas, for all its offense, has a defense that can be had. The Mean Green gave up 49 at Texas State and 44 to Tulsa. They got blown out 52-16 at Indiana to open the year. At home it's been a different story: 44-6 over UNLV and 63-14 over Houston Christian. Both wins at DATCU were decided by halftime, and that's the kind of game Charlotte's recent results suggest this could be.
The Citadel41-43
Houston Christian63-14Charlotte's best case is the Citadel game. The 49ers scored 41 in that one, so there's some offense on this roster when it gets going. The trouble is it hasn't shown up since, and Denton is a tough place to find it. The forecast calls for 84 degrees and cloudy skies with an 11 mph wind, which shouldn't take much away from either offense.
North Texas is 3-2 and the only team in this game with conference momentum. Charlotte is still trying to win a game, any game. If the Mean Green look at home like they did against UNLV and Houston Christian, this will be over early. If Jackson and White look like they did at Tulsa, the 49ers will have a long afternoon.
