Both teams walk into this one with unsettled quarterback rooms, which tells you plenty about where each program actually is. Temple head coach K.C. Keeler is in year 2 after a 5-7 debut season and is running a three-man competition between transfers Jaxon Smolik and Ajani Sheppard and returning backup Camren Boykin, with Smolik the reported slight favorite after a strong spring game. Charlotte's Tim Albin, also entering year 2, has his own three-way battle among Conner Harrell, Grayson Loftis and Cole Gonzales, with Harrell working back from a torn ACL. Neither staff has committed to a starter, so don't be surprised if this position is still unresolved when the Owls and 49ers actually kick off.

None of that is a shock given where these programs finished in 2025. Temple's 5-7 mark was still a bowl miss, but it was progress. Temple's identity going into 2026 is built on continuity. Nine returning offensive starters and 80 percent of the offensive line back means the Owls should be able to plug in whichever quarterback wins the job without much of a learning curve. Charlotte's identity is the opposite problem: new pieces almost everywhere on defense, a stadium still under renovation, and a program searching for any sign that year 1 under Albin was a floor and not a preview.

Harrell's ACL recovery is the swing factor for Charlotte's offense; if he's not full speed, the 49ers are trusting an inexperienced room behind a defense that already gave up points in bunches. Temple doesn't carry that same uncertainty. The Owls know their strengths — receivers, tight end, offensive line, ball security — and are just filling in one blank. That's a meaningfully more stable spot to be in heading toward this matchup.
