This one's built around the gap between two rosters heading in different directions. Noah Fifita is back for his final season in Tucson after throwing for an Arizona single-season record 29 touchdowns in 2025, and Brent Brennan isn't shy about the praise, calling him flat-out "the best story in college football." Cincinnati counters with a total unknown under center in JC French IV, a Georgia Southern transfer who threw for over 2,800 yards in each of his last two seasons there but has never taken a snap in the Big 12.
French inherits an offense that returns zero starters at the skill positions, which is about as clean a slate as a first-year Power Conference quarterback can get. Scott Satterfield has at least stabilized the program, climbing from 3 wins to 5 to 7 over the last three years, but the bigger overhaul is on defense, where Cincinnati ranked near the bottom of the Big 12 in both scoring and run defense last season. New coordinator Nate Woody, who ran Army's top-ranked defense the last two years, is scrapping the old drop-eight look for a 3-4 that's designed to actually get after the quarterback.

Arizona isn't without its own questions. Four Wildcats defensive backs got drafted this spring, gutting a secondary that now has to replace nearly its entire two-deep, and defensive end Tre Smith is working back from the injury that ended his 2025 season early. Still, with Fifita, a returning nucleus, and a Holiday Bowl appearance behind them, Arizona enters as the more finished product — and the market ought to reflect that gap in experience.

For Cincinnati, the appeal here is the version of this program that's been trending up for three straight years — if French settles in fast and Woody's defense creates some early chaos, this could look competitive. But asking a new QB and a defense that lost almost every starter to go on the road and beat a team with legit conference-title aspirations is a lot to ask in year one of two new systems.
