Clemson enters with Christopher Vizzina finally getting his shot at QB1 after three years behind Cade Klubnik, and he's doing it with just 105 career pass attempts to his name. Cal counters with Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who as a true freshman in 2025 threw for 3,454 yards and 18 touchdowns and started all 13 games, the second-best passing season by a Cal freshman behind only Jared Goff. One quarterback is a total unknown in live fire; the other has a full season of tape already.
Clemson's locker room got an honest gut-check this offseason. Dabo Swinney didn't dance around the 7-6 finish, saying flatly that the Tigers 'grossly underachieved' after opening the year ranked No. 4 and getting picked to repeat as ACC champs. He fired offensive coordinator Garrett Riley and brought in Chad Morris to try to fix an offense that finished with more NFL Draft picks than wins. Cal's turnover is just as real, only it's happening on the other side of the ball. Tosh Lupoi, a Bay Area native and former Cal defensive lineman, takes over after Justin Wilcox was fired following a lopsided Big Game loss. Lupoi's background is defense, and it needs the attention: Cal racked up 101 penalties a year ago and got flagged eight-plus times in seven of its final 11 games. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr., plus a run game fortified by Gideon Davidson and SMU transfer Chris Johnson Jr. — the kind of skill-position depth that can mask an inexperienced quarterback if the line holds up. Cal leaned hard into the portal to surround Sagapolutele with more weapons, betting that scheme continuity and a proven passer outweigh Clemson's superior recruiting rankings on paper.
However this shakes out, it's an early gut-check for both new-look coaching staffs, and a legitimate measuring-stick game for a Cal program trying to convince the ACC it belongs in the upper half of the league.
