Duke is the team that's actually won something recently, and Diaz has now out-performed his preseason billing in each of his first two full seasons. Betting Duke here is a bet that program continuity and coaching stability matter more than Clemson's deeper recruiting rankings, especially with both quarterback rooms still unsettled this summer. Duke enters Friday, November 20 as the reigning ACC champion, and Manny Diaz has now beaten preseason expectations in back-to-back years. But the guy who got them there, QB Darian Mensah, bolted for Miami in the portal, leaving a battle between San Jose State transfer Walker Eget and redshirt freshman Dan Mahan to sort out before the Blue Devils can even think about defending anything.
Clemson's version of that same problem looks messier. Cade Klubnik is gone, along with a pile of other starters, and as of this summer Dabo Swinney hadn't landed a portal answer at quarterback — the room is expected to shake out between young arms and incoming signees Tait Reynolds and Brock Bradley. Swinney did blow up his offensive staff after a 7-6 season, bringing back Chad Morris as OC and adding special-teams voice Rich Bisaccia, so there's a genuine reset happening in Clemson, South Carolina.

None of that stops this from being a rematch with real juice. Last year's meeting in Clemson ended 46-45 on a Mensah-to-Hagans two-point conversion with 40 seconds left — Duke's first win at Clemson since 1980. Whatever these two rosters look like by late November, that finish is still hanging over the series.

Neither preseason projection is doing Duke any favors — ESPN and Phil Steele both have the Blue Devils sitting around 11th or 12th in the ACC despite the trophy in the case. Clemson's 2026 class is also its most modest in years by Swinney standards. Two programs picked to take a step back, both getting a chance to prove the projections wrong on the same field.
By the time Friday rolls around, both quarterback competitions should be settled one way or another, and that's really what decides this one. If Clemson's new staff has found stability under center, the Tigers' talent edge could show up fast. If Duke's answer at QB looks anything like what Mensah gave them last November, the Blue Devils have a real shot at doing it again.
