Coastal Carolina isn't the same team that stumbled through last November. The Chanticleers moved on from Tim Beck after a 6-6, bowl-eligible 2025 season ended in a 59-10 blowout loss to James Madison, and handed the keys to Ryan Beard, hired away from Missouri State. First seasons under a new staff are rarely smooth, and by the time this one hits Georgia State on Friday, October 30, we'll have a much better read on whether Beard's system is clicking or still finding its footing.
Georgia State's version of a fresh start looks different. Dell McGee enters year 3 in Atlanta off the back of what the program itself has called challenging 2024 and 2025 seasons, and instead of firing the head coach, they gutted the defensive staff — bringing in Cam Clark and John Haneline as co-defensive coordinators. That's a program betting the head coach is fine and the results were a scheme problem, not a talent problem. This game is an early gut-check on that theory.

Neither team enters this one as a finished product, which is exactly what makes a late-October Sun Belt East game like this interesting. Both rosters have had a full offseason to install new systems, and by this point in the schedule the excuses about install time start to run out — good coaches have their teams playing fast by Halloween, and the ones that don't are usually the ones looking for a new gig again next winter.

This is also a game where recent history says don't sleep on either sideline going haywire. Coastal Carolina's finale collapse against James Madison last year is proof the roster can unravel fast when things go sideways, and Georgia State's brutal 2024-25 stretch means the margin for a bad half is basically zero for a fanbase running out of patience. Whoever handles adversity better in the fourth quarter probably wins this one outright.
