Marshall's whole 2026 season runs through Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, who enters the year as the Sun Belt's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. He led all returning conference players in total yards (2,704), rushing yards per game (60.1) and QB rating (151.8) a year ago, and he's the reason Tony Gibson's second season carries real expectations. Coastal Carolina brings the opposite story: new head coach Ryan Beard, hired away from Missouri State, inherits an offense that finished 117th nationally in passing and 116th in total offense last season.

Beard kept OC Nick Petrino, who ran a top-tier Conference USA passing attack at Missouri State, and the staff went shopping for skill talent to match — Rice transfer Daelen Alexander joins a backfield that already has Dominic Knicely and Jevon Edwards, both of whom averaged 5.7 yards per carry in 2025, plus Missouri State transfer Tristian Gardner, who posted 15.5 yards per catch and 6 touchdowns as a freshman. On the other sideline, Marshall hired veteran defensive coordinator Brad Lambert specifically to fix a defense that dragged the Herd down last year, while an offensive line that's mostly being rebuilt still hasn't settled its center spot.

By the time this one kicks off on Friday, October 9, both teams will have already taken their conference temperature — Marshall opens Sun Belt play October 3 on the road against defending champion James Madison, a brutal litmus test right before hosting Coastal Carolina. Marshall's case for control here starts and ends with the quarterback gap. Del Rio-Wilson is a proven dual-threat difference-maker in this conference, and Coastal Carolina simply doesn't have an answer at that position with that kind of track record. Daytione Smith, a Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team pick after racking up 50 tackles and 3 interceptions in 2025, gives the Herd a legitimate anchor on the back end even while the rest of that defense gets rebuilt around him.

Coastal Carolina's counter is that this isn't the same offense CFN ranked near the bottom of the country last season — between Alexander's power running and Gardner's big-play speed, Beard has actual weapons now, and 7 incoming defensive backs, led by South Dakota State safety Jalen Lee and Villanova corner Damill Bostic Jr., suggest the secondary won't be the liability it was. Whether that translates fast enough to hang with Marshall in Huntington is the entire question of this one.
