TLDR: Oklahoma State scored 29 second-half points at Houston and still lost by 3. Next up is a Colorado team that, through the Texas Tech game, had put up 7 points in 2 of its last 3 games, and on Saturday, October 24 the Buffs have to go win in Stillwater.

Kickoff 72°

Oklahoma State (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) returns home after a 35-32 loss at Houston, where Drew Mestemaker threw for 365 yards but the defense gave up 5 touchdown passes. Colorado (2-3, 0-2) lost 3 straight through the Texas Tech game, scoring 13 points or fewer in each, with Isaac Wilson at quarterback and several receivers and defensive backs hurt. The game comes down to whether the Buffs' offense can take advantage of a Cowboys defense that just got carved up.

Colorado Buffaloes
  • Opened 2-0 including a road win at Georgia Tech
  • Cowboys secondary just allowed 343 yards and 5 TD passes
  • 7, 13 and 7 points in the last 3 games
  • Wilson threw 4 INTs in his first start
  • WR Perry doubtful, TE Atkins out
Oklahoma State Cowboys
  • Mestemaker threw for 365 and 3 TDs at Houston
  • Offense put up 29 second-half points on the road
  • Caleb Hawkins broke out as another receiving threat

Start with the quarterbacks, because the gap between them is the story. Drew Mestemaker went 22-of-34 for 365 yards and 3 touchdowns at Houston and led an 88-yard drive late in the 4th quarter to cut it to a 3-point game. Colorado, meanwhile, has stuck with Isaac Wilson, whose first start was the 29-7 home loss to Texas Tech. He threw 4 interceptions in it.

The Houston loss still shows what's wrong with Oklahoma State, and it's the defense. Conner Weigman threw for 343 yards and 5 touchdowns. Once the Cougars had the lead back, they drove the field and kept Mestemaker on the sideline until the clock ran out. The beat coverage also flagged costly penalties. The upside was Caleb Hawkins, who had a breakout night as a receiver and gives Mestemaker another weapon to go with Justin Bowick, who caught the late touchdown. No board is posted for this one yet, so the price is still an open question.

Colorado's season split in two. The Buffs opened by winning 14-13 at Georgia Tech and beating Weber State 52-21. Then came a 41-7 loss at Northwestern, a 13-23 loss at Baylor and the Texas Tech game, 3 straight losses where the offense never topped 13 points. It got worse off the field too: Texas Tech allegedly found a Colorado play-call sheet in a hotel bar, and Deion Sanders spent part of the bye week downplaying it. Offensive coordinator Brennan Marion has been asked publicly what's behind the struggles. Colorado also hosted Utah after the bye, and that result will shape the picture by the time these two kick off.

Wilson's supporting cast is thin. Receiver K. Perry is listed doubtful, and tight end Z. Atkins is out, so Colorado is short targets in the passing game it most needs to fix. On defense, corner M. Vickers and linebacker T. Martinez are both out. That's bad timing against a quarterback who just threw for 365 on the road and now has Hawkins as another option.

Oklahoma State's injuries are more manageable but not nothing. Guard J. Sexton (leg) and tight end O. Hammond are both out with no timetable, which tests the interior line and the blocking at tight end. The forecast in Stillwater is mild: mid-70s, cloudy, about 11 mph of wind. Weather shouldn't stop either team from throwing it around.

In the end, both units with something to prove meet in the same spot. Colorado's offense has to show it can move the ball against a defense that just gave up 5 touchdown passes. Oklahoma State's defense has to show that Houston was a bad night and not a trend. The Cowboys are 4-2 and 2-1 in the Big 12 with a quarterback who's playing well. The Buffs are 0-2 in conference and still looking for an offense.
