Kennesaw State went from 2-10 to Conference USA champs in a single year. Delaware won a bowl game in its very first season up from FCS. Now the two fastest risers in the league share a Saturday.

Kennesaw State enters as the defending Conference USA champion with a quarterback who's already delivered in the biggest moment the program has ever had. Home field and a defense that thrived in low-scoring, takeaway-driven wins gives the Owls the outright edge here. Delaware's offense is dangerous enough to make this a game, but backing the champs at home is the safer read until Delaware proves its 4-4 conference form was a fluke.

Delaware
  • Bowl champs in first-ever FBS season
  • Minicucci returns after 3,683-yard, 23-TD year
  • 19 roster players already committed back
  • Just 4-4 in Conference USA play in 2025
  • Playing on road against defending league champ
  • Still adjusting to a full FBS conference grind
Kennesaw State
  • Defending Conference USA champions, 10-4 in 2025
  • Odom is a proven dual-threat, title-game MVP
  • Defense went 9-1 when holding foes under 250 yards
  • 119th nationally in penalties, 132nd in penalty yards
  • Needs to prove worst-to-first wasn't a one-year spike
  • Must replicate magic without the element of surprise

Delaware and Kennesaw State enter 2026 as the two programs that made Conference USA look silly for doubting them. The Owls stormed from a 2-10 nightmare to a 10-4 championship season under Jerry Mack. The Blue Hens skipped the growing pains altogether, going 7-6 in their first FBS season and knocking off Louisiana in the 68 Ventures Bowl to become just the second first-year FBS program ever to win a bowl game. Neither team is supposed to be this good this fast, and on Saturday, November 7, they get to find out which trajectory is real.

Kennesaw State's engine is quarterback Amari Odom, who was the Conference USA Championship Game MVP after firing the game-winning touchdown pass to Navelle Dean in the final minute against Jacksonville State. The redshirt sophomore threw for 2,139 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2025 while adding 379 rushing yards and 7 scores on the ground, giving the Owls a dual-threat piece that a lot of CUSA defenses simply couldn't account for. Delaware counters with its own returning weapon in QB Nick Minicucci, who threw for 3,683 yards and 23 touchdowns last season, a top-10 national mark in passing yards per game. Nineteen players from that bowl-winning roster have already committed to running it back in 2026, so this isn't a team hoping to replicate its debut season by accident.

KENN Kennesaw State

The bigger question for Kennesaw State isn't talent, it's discipline. The Owls were 119th nationally in penalties and 132nd in penalty yards a year ago, the kind of self-inflicted damage that eventually catches up to a team playing a real schedule instead of an expansion-era slate. Their defense, though, backs up the hype: Kennesaw State went 8-0 when it forced a takeaway and 9-1 when it held opponents under 250 yards, which is the profile of a team built to win close games rather than just blow teams out. Delaware's path back to the postseason runs through a Conference USA slate it finished just 4-4 in during year one, a reminder that its non-conference success didn't fully carry over once league play started.

This is exactly the kind of game Conference USA wants people talking about: last year's worst-to-first champion at home against the league's buzziest newcomer, both led by quarterbacks who can beat you with their arm and their legs. Neither program has any business being this competitive this early in their respective transitions, and that's precisely why it's worth circling.
