Vanderbilt's still the pick here even with the QB situation unresolved — the roster and depth gap between an SEC program and a first-year-plus FBS team is wide enough to cover for some early-season sloppiness. That said, this isn't the layup it would've been with Pavia still throwing it. Delaware's a live enough team that a slow start from Vandy's new starter turns this into a real moneyline sweat.

This one's got layers. Vanderbilt went 10-3 in 2025, finished 15th in the country, and beat Tennessee for the first time since 2018 — all with Diego Pavia running the show. Pavia's gone now, off to an undrafted free-agent deal with the Ravens after going undrafted despite a Heisman-finalist season, and Clark Lea is staring down what one outlet called the most consequential decision of the program's modern era: who plays quarterback. The names floating around are transfer arms like Katin Houser and Porter Minchey, plus five-star freshman Jared Curtis, the highest-ranked signee in Vanderbilt history. None of it's settled, and Delaware's the team that gets to find out what an unsettled Vanderbilt looks like.
Delaware isn't just happy to be here, either. In their first season at the FBS level, the Blue Hens went 7-6, took Conference USA to 4-4, and beat Louisiana 20-13 in the 68 Ventures Bowl — only the second program ever to win a bowl game in its debut FBS season. QB Nick Minicucci threw for 3,683 yards with 23 touchdowns against just 7 picks, and both his top backs and receivers are back. Coach Ryan Carty leaned hard into retention over the portal this offseason, which tells you he likes what he's got.
