Last December these two played for the ACC championship in overtime. This time it's just a Friday night in Charlottesville, but neither side is treating it that way.

Virginia's the more stable side heading into the fall — Pribula gives them a known, experienced arm while Duke is trusting an unproven transfer in a debut Power 4 season. Take the Cavaliers to win outright at home in a rematch they've been waiting to avenge.

Duke
  • Defending ACC champions under Manny Diaz
  • Defense was elite in last year's title run
  • Lost Heisman-caliber QB Mensah to Miami portal
  • Eget has zero Power 4 snaps to his name
Virginia
  • School-record 11 wins, ACC title game trip in 2025
  • Pribula gives them proven transfer QB play
  • Elliott just got a contract extension through 2030
  • Pribula still adjusting to a new scheme this fall
  • Backup Holstein unproven if Pribula gets hurt

Duke won the last meeting 27-20 in overtime to claim the program's first ACC title since 1989, and that game is the entire subtext here. Virginia has had 10 months to think about it, and Tony Elliott's response was to get his quarterback spot fixed instead of hoping it fixes itself. Missouri transfer Beau Pribula enters as the clear favorite to start, giving the Cavaliers a proven Power 4 arm behind an offense that's now run by OC Des Kitchings.

Duke's turnaround looks different. Manny Diaz has to replace Darian Mensah, the ACC's passing leader who bolted for Miami in the portal along with receiver Cooper Barkate, and hand the keys to San Jose State transfer Walker Eget. Eget put up big numbers in the Mountain West the last two years, but he's never taken a Power 4 snap, and that gap is the single biggest variable hanging over Duke's title defense.

Diaz's calling card has always been defense, and if last year's title-game script repeats, this is the group that keeps Duke's season afloat while Eget finds his footing. Virginia, meanwhile, is leaning on continuity: Elliott just signed an extension through 2030 off the back of an 11-win season, and Pribula won't be the only new piece — Alabama-by-way-of-Pittsburgh transfer Eli Holstein is the experienced insurance if anything goes sideways at quarterback.

Both programs are selling stability to the public while quietly replacing key parts underneath, which is what makes this such an interesting measuring-stick game months out. Virginia gets a shot at revenge in front of its own crowd; Duke gets to see, in a real ACC setting, whether the defense Diaz built can carry a brand-new starting quarterback the way it carried Mensah a year ago.

The name to watch in Charlottesville is Pribula's command of Kitchings' scheme by late October — a transfer QB two months into fall camp is a very different quantity than one who's played a full season under a new staff. On the other side, Duke fans should watch how much of that ACC-title defensive identity survived the offseason, since it's the thing Diaz is counting on to bail out an offense in flux.

It's the Friday, October 23 slot for a reason — this is a game both staffs will have circled since the confetti fell in the ACC title game. Neither roster looks exactly like the one that played in December, but the storyline writes itself either way.
