Both sidelines are figuring out who takes the first snap of 2026. Alabama lost Ty Simpson and is sorting out a competition between senior Austin Mack and sophomore Keelon Russell, while East Carolina lost its own starter, Katin Houser, to Illinois and brought in transfers Mitch Griffis and Emory Williams to replace him. Neither team has settled the job publicly, but both are walking into a nationally televised opener with an unproven arm under center.
East Carolina isn't walking in empty-handed. Blake Harrell is 14-5 across less than two full seasons in Greenville, with back-to-back bowl wins, and he just poached Jordan Davis off North Texas's top-ranked offense to run the show as his new coordinator. The Pirates also churned coordinators on defense, losing Josh Aldridge to USF, so both staffs are breaking in new pieces alongside new quarterbacks.

The lone previous game came in 1998 at Legion Field, when Alabama survived 23-22 after East Carolina outscored the Tide 22-2 in the second half — saved only by a blocked-PAT return score.
