Blake Harrell heads into Year 2 in Greenville off a 9-4 season that included a Military Bowl win over Pittsburgh — the Pirates' best regular season in 11 years. Across town in the standings, Tim Albin is trying to dig Charlotte out of a 1-11 disaster that got Biff Poggi fired. Both coaches are entering their second year, but they're starting from completely different places heading into this American Conference matchup on Friday, November 13.
The quarterback pictures for both programs are still very much in flux this offseason. ECU lost Katin Houser to the transfer portal and brought in Miami's Emory Williams and Texas Tech's Mitch Griffis to battle it out. Charlotte's situation is murkier: Conner Harrell is working back from a season-ending ACL tear, Grayson Loftis took over the reins after that injury, and Pitt transfer Cole Gonzales reportedly took the bulk of spring snaps. None of it is settled, and won't be for months.

The 49ers retained all three coordinators from Albin's first season and went heavy in the portal, adding defensive linemen Ayo Tifase (Florida State) and Khalif Spencer, a trio of transfer running backs, and receiver Cam Pedro, who caught 65 passes for 814 yards and 4 touchdowns last season at Southeast Missouri State. ECU, meanwhile, got a jolt of preseason respect — 11 Pirates were tabbed Preseason All-Conference by Athlon Sports, a sign the roster Harrell built last year has real staying power.

There's a lot of runway between now and kickoff, and quarterback battles and depth charts can shift plenty between July and mid-November. But the gap between where these two programs are right now is stark — one is coming off a signature season with a loaded, experienced roster, the other is still trying to find stability at the game's most important position while rebuilding almost everywhere else.
