East Carolina and Florida Atlantic wrap up their regular seasons against each other on Thanksgiving night, and depending on how the fall breaks, this Greenville date could carry real bowl-eligibility weight.

Florida Atlantic brings back the more proven commodity at the position that decides these games, and that's worth backing on the road against a team replacing 58% of its production. East Carolina's floor is still higher than most rebuilding teams thanks to Blake Harrell, but an unresolved quarterback situation is a real outright-win risk this late in the year.

Florida Atlantic
  • Returns starting QB Caden Veltkamp, top-25 nationally in 6 categories
  • Only program retaining entire staff plus starting QB
  • Aggressively addressed defense through the transfer portal
  • Turnover margin was -21 last season, no guarantee it improves
  • Zach Kittley still a young, unproven head coach
  • Defense remains the roster's biggest question mark
East Carolina
  • Blake Harrell is 14-5 with a Military Bowl win over Pitt
  • Coming off a 9-win season, first in the American since 2014
  • Preseason win total set at 7.5, market still expects a strong year
  • Lost two-year starting QB Katin Houser to Illinois
  • Returns only 42% of last year's production overall
  • Offense returns just 33% of its production, among the lowest in FBS

This one's built around continuity versus a total reset at quarterback. Florida Atlantic brings back Caden Veltkamp, who finished 2025 ranked among the nation's top 25 passers in six different categories, plus his connection with Easton Messer and the entire coaching staff around him. East Carolina, meanwhile, lost two-year starter Katin Houser to Illinois and spent the offseason auditioning transfers Mitch Griffis and Emory Williams to replace him.

That gap matters more in Greenville than almost anywhere else in the American Conference, because East Carolina is replacing production almost everywhere. The Pirates return only 42% of last year's production overall, with just 33% of the offense back — bottom-15 nationally by that measure. FAU has holes too, particularly on defense after a turnover margin that bottomed out at -21 last season, but the Owls at least know who their quarterback is.

Blake Harrell isn't walking into this blind, though. He's 14-5 since taking over and just delivered ECU's first 9-win season since joining the American in 2014, capped by a Military Bowl upset of a favored Pittsburgh team. Vegas has the Pirates' preseason win total at 7.5, which tells you the market still expects Harrell to keep this program humming even with a new arm under center.

FAU's pitch for a sneaky good season leans on the idea that last year's turnover margin was basically a floor, not a real indicator of talent, and that an offense-first program under Zach Kittley just needs its defense to be merely competent to turn borderline losses into wins. The Owls went out and addressed the front seven in the portal specifically because Kittley knows Veltkamp and Messer can move the ball against most anybody in this league.

By the time this game actually kicks off on Thursday, November 26, both rosters will look a lot more settled than they do in July — ECU will have crowned a starter, FAU's defensive newcomers will have a full season of tape. But the shape of the matchup is already visible: a team betting on its returning quarterback against a team betting on its head coach to manage a near-total reboot.
