Jon Sumrall's first game as Florida's head coach isn't a cupcake in disguise — Florida Atlantic brings back its entire starting cast, and the Gators are still figuring out who they are.

Florida's talent gap over an AAC team, even a rebuilding Florida squad, is real, and Sumrall's honeymoon opener at home is the kind of spot new coaches usually cash. FAU's turnover-prone quarterback play is the swing risk that keeps this from being a lock, but backing the Gators to win outright is the level-headed read here.

Florida Atlantic
  • Only FBS team returning entire staff and starting QB
  • Veltkamp threw for 3,641 yards, 24 TDs in 2025
  • Messer caught 104 passes, 3rd-most in FBS
  • Veltkamp threw 17 interceptions last season
  • Coming off a 4-8 finish, picked around .500 again
  • Talent and depth gap vs. an SEC roster
Florida
  • New coach Jon Sumrall built winners at Troy and Tulane
  • Home opener at the Swamp with a fresh-start crowd
  • Talent edge as a Power 4 program
  • Went 4-8 in 2025, fired Napier mid-season
  • Quarterback job still unsettled between Jones and Philo
  • Historically brutal offense — 1-20 when under 24 points

This one's less about star power than about first impressions. Florida is starting over after a 4-8 collapse that got Billy Napier fired in October, and Sumrall — who built a winner at Tulane — gets his Gainesville debut against a team that knows exactly what it has.

FAU is the rare program that returns its whole coaching staff and starting quarterback, and that continuity matters against a Florida team still sorting out RSVP under center. Caden Veltkamp threw for 3,641 yards and 24 touchdowns a year ago, with Easton Messer — who caught 104 passes, third-most in the FBS — still on the outside. The concern for the Owls is the 17 interceptions Veltkamp piled up along the way; against a defense with anything to give, that number bites.

Florida's own offense was the story of its collapse — the Gators went 1-20 the last four seasons when they failed to score 24 points, which tells you where Sumrall's rebuild starts. A clean, mistake-free opener at home matters more for stabilizing the program than the final score does.

The quarterback competition in Gainesville between Tramell Jones Jr. and Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo will likely still be a story into fall camp, and whoever wins the job inherits a group that needs to be more explosive and more efficient on third down than it's been in years. FAU, meanwhile, adds Texas Tech transfer Kelby Valsin to a receiving corps that's already breaking in speed around Messer.

None of that changes the baseline: this is a Power 4 team at home against an AAC team picked to finish around .500, and new coaches usually get the benefit of the doubt in openers like this. But FAU isn't walking into the Swamp hoping just to survive — turnovers aside, this is a team built to sling it, and Florida's own uncertainty on offense means the margin might be tighter than the name on the jersey suggests.
