FAU's the side to back here on pure roster continuity — Veltkamp, Messer, and the whole coaching staff are back, while FIU is still settling a QB competition entering the year. That kind of offensive stability at home, in a get-back spot after last year's loss, is hard to pass up even with FAU's defensive question marks.

The rivalry resumes Saturday, September 19, with FAU hosting after FIU snapped a 7-game Shula Bowl skid last season, winning 38-28 to end Florida Atlantic's stranglehold on the series. FAU still leads the all-time series 17-5, but that's cold comfort after getting run out of their own trophy game a year ago. Revenge is the obvious storyline walking into this one.

FAU brings back its entire coaching staff and starting QB Caden Veltkamp, the only FBS program that can say both. That continuity matters on a team that returns 83% of last year's yardage production, with the Veltkamp-to-Easton Messer connection anchoring a Zach Kittley offense that should again put up points. FIU, meanwhile, is sorting out its QB1 spot for the first time since 2024 — App State transfer Kohl is the presumed favorite, with Delaware transfer Zach Marker, who tore his ACL last season, working back into the mix.
