Neither team enters this one with a settled quarterback room, which makes the Halloween date in Lynchburg more interesting than the records alone suggest. FIU is replacing Keyone Jenkins, the 2025 preseason All-CUSA caliber passer who bolted for the transfer portal after an injury-shortened, uneven senior-ish campaign. Liberty's been rebuilding at the position since Kaidon Salter left the program, and Wake Forest transfer Deshawn Purdie — who threw for 618 yards and 6 touchdowns in a backup role last year — is the name to know as that competition sorts itself out.

The bigger swing factor might be program direction. Willie Simmons enters year 2 in Miami after FIU closed 2025 on a 4-game Conference USA winning streak to sneak into the First Responder Bowl, even if that trip ended in a lopsided loss to UTSA. Liberty went the other way, following its magical 13-1 Fiesta Bowl season with back-to-back drop-offs, bottoming out at 4-8 last fall. Chadwell responded by all but rebuilding the roster, bringing in 28 transfers this offseason — a full-scale reload rather than a tweak.
