Both of these programs are turning a page. USF is moving on from Alex Golesh, who bolted for Auburn and took record-setting quarterback Byrum Brown with him, handing the keys to first-time head coach Brian Hartline after a four-man quarterback battle that Michael Van Buren Jr. won out. FIU, meanwhile, gets to open Year 2 under Willie Simmons off the best season the program has had in years, and the Panthers start it on the road against an in-state rival mid-rebuild.

USF's roster overhaul goes beyond the coaching change. Golesh took a good chunk of the 2025 team with him to Auburn, and Hartline had to rebuild fast, landing the American's top-rated transfer class in the process, headlined by receivers Kenny Odom and Bryson Rodgers. FIU has its own holes to patch, having lost three of its five starting offensive linemen to the portal and graduation, though the return of Antonio Tripp Jr. at right guard softens that blow.

It's the final season the Bulls will call Raymond James Stadium home before their on-campus stadium opens in 2027, and the program's stated goal is finally breaking through to the American Championship Game. A shaky start against a hungry FIU team in front of the Tampa crowd would be a rough way to open the Hartline era.
