Jon Sumrall made it official on August 31: Aaron Philo starts at quarterback when Florida opens its season tonight against Florida Atlantic. Philo followed offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner over from Georgia Tech, and that head start in the system is what tipped a race Sumrall called close enough that "both of those guys' skillsets are similar enough that we don't have to drastically change a game plan if we have to go with one or the other." Ahead of kickoff, Sumrall pointed to how both quarterbacks carried themselves through the competition rather than relitigating it, saying simply, "They led by how they carried out that process really well," per GatorCountry.
Tramell Jones Jr. took the news the way a program wants its captain to. "I was definitely disappointed, but after the decision, I had two choices to make. I could either lay my head down … or I could keep competing," Jones said, per AtoZ Sports. Sumrall backed that up, saying "Philo understands he's not being anointed anything, and Tramell understands that he's not being relegated to a certain role" — which means Jones is QB2 with a real role, not just a name on the depth chart.
It's also the quiet close of an era. DJ Lagway, the presumptive quarterback of the future before any of this, is now throwing passes for Baylor, where he's reportedly been healthy and settling in as a leader for the Bears. Florida closed out last season on a four-game skid — losses to Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Tennessee — before snapping it in the best way available, a 40-21 thrashing of Florida State on November 29. Sumrall isn't dismissing any of it. "They were the fastest offense in college football last year," he said this week, adding that FAU carries "the 15th or 16th most production returning in college football" — a program he already scouted once, having faced the Owls last season at Tulane, per GatorCountry. That tracks with how last season ended for FAU — a 3-42 loss to East Carolina — but Veltkamp and Messer are a real offense walking into Gainesville, not a name to circle and forget.

Florida is a game-day machine off the field before it's played a snap under Sumrall — the program's account marked 19 straight sellouts this week, and Sumrall wants Saturday night to sound like it.
