Matt Entz coached linebackers at the Coliseum a year before he took over Fresno State — now he brings the Bulldogs back to face the program that gave him his last stop before the head-coaching chair.

USC brings back the Big Ten's leading passer, its top sack producers, and the most returning starters in the conference — that's a heavy roster and continuity edge against a team still settling a quarterback battle. Fresno State's new starter, whoever it is, will have thrown a limited number of college passes walking into the Coliseum. Back the Trojans to handle this at home.

Fresno State
  • Entz won two national titles at North Dakota State
  • 9-4 debut season, elite first-year mark
  • New Pac-12 membership raises program stakes
  • Quarterback job still unsettled between Martin, Mandal
  • Lost primary starter Conklin to the portal
  • 0-4-1 all-time on the road vs USC historically
USC
  • Maiava returns as Big Ten's leading passer
  • 17 returning starters, most in the conference
  • No. 1-ranked recruiting class arrives this fall
  • Turnovers flagged as Maiava's key offseason focus
  • New pieces still need in-game chemistry reps

This one has a coaching subplot before it has anything else. Entz spent the 2024 season as USC's assistant head coach for defense and linebackers coach under Lincoln Riley before Fresno State hired him away that December. He went 9-4 in year one, the second-most wins by a first-year head coach in program history, and now he walks his new team into the building he used to work in.

USC isn't just any Week 1-ish stop, either. The Trojans bring back Jayden Maiava, the Big Ten's leading passer a season ago, along with head coach Riley and offensive coordinator continuity for a third straight year — a rarity anywhere in the country. USC also returns 17 starters, the most in the conference, and brings in the No. 1-ranked recruiting class to boot. On paper, this is about as loaded and cohesive a roster as the Trojans have fielded under Riley.

Fresno State's path here is different. This is the Bulldogs' first season in the reconstituted Pac-12 after the Mountain West exodus, and their offensive identity is still getting sorted. Maryland transfer Khristian Martin is the presumptive front-runner at quarterback after arriving this offseason, but he's in a real competition with returner Jayden Mandal, and neither has much of a proven track record yet.

That quarterback uncertainty matters more given who Fresno State lost. Carson Conklin, who started three games and beat both Boise State and Wyoming a year ago, bolted for the transfer portal once Martin arrived and has since landed at Sacramento State. So whoever wins the Bulldogs' job enters a night game at the Coliseum with limited game reps behind him, against a USC front seven that returns its top three players in sack production.

History leans Trojan too. USC is 4-1 all-time against Fresno State, and the Bulldogs haven't had much success finding their footing early against a program this deep at the skill positions. Still, don't sleep on Entz's track record for building physical, disciplined teams fast — he won two national titles at North Dakota State and got Fresno State to nine wins in his debut. If the Bulldogs are going to make a statement in their first Pac-12 season, an upset in Los Angeles on Friday, September 4 would be the loudest possible way to do it.

For USC, this is as much a measuring-stick game as a tune-up. A young but deep roster with Heisman buzz around Maiava wants to show it can be efficient out of the gate, not just talented. Cutting down turnovers has been the offseason emphasis for Maiava specifically, and a clean, low-mistake performance here would go a long way toward validating the hype that's followed this Trojans team into the season.
