Two brand-new Pac-12 tenants meet in Logan, and both are still figuring out who they are in this league. Fresno State brings the flashier resume; Utah State brings the tougher question mark on defense.

Fresno State comes in as the more finished product, a 9-4 team a year ago with a proven staff and a portal class built to plug real holes. Utah State is a year-two rebuild replacing its starting QB and defending with a unit that was the worst in the Mountain West last season. Back the Bulldogs to win outright until Utah State's defense actually shows it fixed something.

Fresno State
  • Went 9-4 in 2025 under coach Matt Entz
  • Loaded transfer class on both lines
  • Brand-new starting QB with little starting experience
  • Offensive line has to gel in a hurry
Utah State
  • Explosive deep-ball passing attack, 13.3 yards/catch
  • RB Javen Jacobs averaged 6.6 yards per carry
  • Defense ranked dead-last in Mountain West in 2025
  • New starter Hillstad has limited game experience

Fresno State enters its first Pac-12 season off a 9-4 year under second-year coach Matt Entz, and the QB room got a major offseason upgrade: Maryland transfer Khristian Martin, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound arm with size teams covet, won the job after early camp battles. Utah State counters with its own new starter in McCae Hillstad, a junior who saw limited action a year ago and takes over an offense that already knows how to push the ball downfield.

The bigger swing factor for Utah State isn't the QB change, it's the defense. The Aggies finished dead last in the Mountain West a year ago, surrendering 440.1 yards per game, and went 1-6 when opponents topped 275 through the air. Fresno State's portal haul on the other side of the ball, including defensive end Maverick Noonan and cornerback Preston Okafor out of Nebraska, gives Entz's staff real length and speed to throw at a Utah State offense that still moves the ball well even with turnover.

Both programs are treating this Pac-12 launch year as a proving ground, which makes November games like this one more about conference standing than nonconference hype. Utah State's staff brought in 29 newcomers, mostly transfers, betting the fixes land before November; Fresno State is betting its deeper coaching continuity and portal additions carry it through a first-year league gauntlet that includes Boise State and San Diego State.

Utah State running back Javen Jacobs is the engine to watch for the home side, averaging 6.6 yards a carry a season ago, and the Aggies' deep-ball passing game averaged 13.3 yards per completion, numbers that suggest explosive plays are there even in a rebuilding year. The concern flagged by nearly every preview is what happens in the fourth quarter and overtime, where Utah State's offense has struggled to finish close games, exactly the kind of margin that could define a game against a Fresno State team with more proven depth.

Nothing is settled about either quarterback room this early — Martin still has to hold off camp competition in Fresno, and Hillstad is unproven as a full-time starter — so treat any QB1 projection for Saturday, November 7 as a moving target until closer to kickoff. What is set is the trajectory: Fresno State is trying to be the team the rest of the Pac-12 chases, while Utah State is trying to prove last year's leaky defense was a one-year problem, not a Pac-12-sized one.
