Faizon Brandon walked into Neyland Stadium as the SEC's only true freshman starting quarterback in Week 1 and walked out with one of the best debuts a Power Four rookie has ever had. He finished 13-for-17 for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air, then added 2 more scores on the ground, making him just the fourth Tennessee quarterback since 1995 to throw 3 touchdown passes and run for 2 more in the same game. Beating out sophomore George MacIntyre over a full spring and fall camp clearly paid off immediately.

This was Tennessee's first look at Jim Knowles' defense in orange and white, and it set the tone from the opening series. Edge rusher Tyree Weathersby dropped Furman transfer quarterback Jake Garcia for an 8-yard loss on the game's first defensive snap, and the pressure never let up — Edwin Spillman and Xavier Gilliam both added third-down sacks that forced punts. Garcia, who'd looked functional a week earlier in Furman's opener, finished just 15-of-28 for 183 yards with an interception against a defensive front that outclassed him from snap one.
Furman's only points came on a third-quarter field goal and a garbage-time touchdown drive in the fourth, long after the outcome was decided — the linescore shows Tennessee scoring in bunches of 7 and 21 in the first three quarters before easing off. For an FCS program overmatched at the line of scrimmage against an SEC roster that just got a five-touchdown debut from a true freshman, there wasn't much to build on beyond survival.
The final margin, 47 points, says everything about the gap between these two programs on paper. But it says something else too: Tennessee's quarterback of the future is already playing like Tennessee's quarterback of the present, and the group of pass rushers Knowles inherited looks ready to be one of the SEC's more disruptive units before this thing gets to conference play.
