This series wraps up exactly where it should: with a road revenge shot on the table. Georgia Southern beat Jacksonville State 41-34 in Statesboro last September, and the Eagles get a chance to close out the two-game set on Sept. 19 at JSU Stadium in Jacksonville, Alabama. Transfer QB Max Johnson, who's bounced from LSU to Texas A&M to North Carolina, is set to lead Clay Helton's offense in year 5 of his tenure — his first real shot at a starting job since a brutal 2024 injury cut his season short at UNC.
Jacksonville State enters with a real chip on its shoulder after dropping that shootout last year. Charles Kelly's second season kicks off on the strength of a 9-5 debut campaign that included a CUSA title-game trip and a bowl win over Troy. Dual-threat QB Caleb Creel is back after piling up 1,076 rushing yards and 7 rushing scores to go with 1,500-plus passing yards and 9 through the air — the engine of a Gamecocks offense that ran for close to 3,500 yards as a team.

Both programs are dealing with some offseason churn underneath those numbers. Jacksonville State lost offensive coordinator Clint Trickett to Arkansas and had to promote tight ends coach Taylor Housewright to replace him, while running back Cam Cook — a key piece of that ground attack — is off to West Virginia. Georgia Southern, meanwhile, is walking into this one having already played at Clemson two weeks earlier, a brutal early gauntlet that'll test depth before the Eagles ever set foot in Alabama.
Neither side has much margin to hide flaws. Jacksonville State also has to replace a 6-7, 295-pound edge rusher who led the team with 4.5 sacks and 43 tackles, which matters against an Eagles offense that just found a new arm to distribute the ball.
