James Madison is the far more proven program walking into this one, riding a Sun Belt title and a Playoff appearance while Georgia State is coming off a 1-11 season and a defense that finished near the bottom of FBS. Even with a new head coach and an unsettled quarterback race, the roster gap here is significant enough that the Dukes should be safely favored. Georgia State would need its retooled offensive line and portal additions to gel awfully fast to make this competitive.

This is an early look at a Sun Belt East matchup that on paper shouldn't be much of one. JMU went 12-2 a season ago, ran the table in conference play, won the program's first Sun Belt title and made the College Football Playoff before falling to Oregon. Georgia State went the opposite direction, finishing 1-11 and 0-8 in the Sun Belt under Dell McGee, who's now 4-20 through two seasons in Atlanta. The Dukes host this one at Bridgeforth Stadium, where they've won all 3 meetings against Georgia State in program history.
The bigger story in Harrisonburg is the sideline, not the schedule. JMU fired up the transfer portal and the coaching search after Bob Chesney bolted for UCLA, landing Billy Napier — the same Napier who won back-to-back Sun Belt titles at Louisiana before his run at Florida ended last fall. He inherits a roster that just made the Playoff, but also a wide-open quarterback race after both Alonza Barnett and Matthew Sluka are gone. Camden Coleman was viewed as the front-runner in spring, fending off transfer additions Davi Belfort and Arrington Maiden, but nothing about that competition is settled with months still to go before kickoff.

Georgia State's offseason has been about rebuilding from the trenches out. The Panthers brought in seven offensive linemen from Power 4 programs and leaned hard into the transfer portal at nearly every position after finishing 130th nationally in total defense last year. Running back Jordon Simmons is gone, but Lanear McCrary and Georgetown transfer Savion Hart arrive to try to replace him. It's a lot of new pieces for a staff that's still searching for its first real signature win.
