Tony Gibson's second year in Huntington is shaping up as a bounce-back story. Marshall went through a full rebuild in 2025 and still sat at 5-5 with two games left before a 2-point loss to App State and a 4-point home loss to Georgia Southern closed the door on a bowl bid. That near-miss is the whole reason this late-season Sun Belt slate matters again — the Herd have the pieces to push for the title race Gibson was hired to chase, and hosting Georgia State on Friday, November 20 is exactly the kind of game a program says it needs to stop leaving on the table.
Georgia State is coming from a completely different place. Dell McGee's Panthers finished 1-11 overall and 0-8 in Sun Belt play in 2025, and the offseason hasn't made the roster deeper. Leading receiver Ted Hurst is gone after a Senior Bowl-caliber year, and No. 2 target Javon Robinson hit the transfer portal, stripping out the two biggest pass-catching threats from a team that already struggled to move the ball.
