Georgia Tech is the proven commodity here — a 9-4, ranked-to-close-the-year team that kept its head coach and its identity over the winter. Virginia Tech is asking a first-time starting quarterback and a defensive coordinator who was fired from this exact job a year ago to gel fast, against a real opponent. Until Franklin's group proves it against a team that matters, backing the Yellow Jackets to win outright is the safer read.
Georgia Tech
+9-4 finish, No. 24 ranking in 2025
+Mendoza: 18-of-24, 5 TD in spot duty
+Portal reinforcements on defensive front
−Unproven as a full-time starting QB
−New OC George Godsey installing offense
−Road trip into a hostile ACC building
Virginia Tech
+$229M investment, $75M gift fueling rebuild
+Franklin brings 104-win pedigree from Penn State
+DC Brent Pry knows the building, the culture
−Coming off a 3-9 season, coach fired mid-year
−Nearly all-new roster and staff, chemistry unproven
−Franklin himself was fired from Penn State amid a collapse
Friday's ACC clash is really a quarterback introduction on both sides. Georgia Tech hands the offense to Alberto Mendoza, kid brother of national champion Fernando Mendoza, who's never started a full season but flashed real ability in spot duty behind Haynes King last year, going 18-of-24 for 286 yards and 5 touchdowns against just 1 interception. Virginia Tech counters with Penn State transfer Ethan Grunkemeyer, who completed 69% of his throws for 8 touchdowns a year ago and now walks into a starting job for a coaching staff trying to convince Blacksburg to believe again.
James Franklin didn't just import a quarterback — he went and got him weapons. Que'Sean Brown arrives from Duke off a two-year stretch of 105 catches for nearly 1,400 yards, and Marlion Jackson brings a deep-threat element out of Louisiana Tech. Georgia Tech answered on the other side of the ball, loading up its defensive front with transfers like Noah Carter out of Alabama and Taje McCoy from Oklahoma State — the kind of additions that turned a 9-4 season into real belief the Yellow Jackets can push further in 2026.

Both programs are running very different plays out of the same offseason. Georgia Tech is doubling down on continuity under Brent Key, protecting a formula that already produced a ranked finish. Virginia Tech blew the whole thing up under Franklin and is betting the pieces click faster than they ever did in his final years at Penn State.

The strangest subplot in this one belongs to Brent Pry, who was fired as Virginia Tech's head coach three games into a disastrous 2025 and is now back in Blacksburg as Franklin's defensive coordinator. Franklin has called it the most important hire of the offseason, leaning on Pry's feel for the building, the roster and the fan base to speed up a rebuild that would otherwise take years. It's an unusual bet — betting on the guy who just got fired from the top job to fix the unit that got him fired.

Georgia Tech has been the team playing meaningful November football; Virginia Tech hasn't sniffed that in a long time. Friday night in Blacksburg is as good an early measuring stick as Franklin is going to get for whether year one is a step forward or just a longer runway.
