Hawai'i went 9-4 in 2025, won a bowl game for the first time in 5 years, and enters Timmy Chang's 5th season as a legitimate Group of Five playoff contender. Micah Alejado, who threw for over 2,000 yards last year despite battling an ankle injury most of the season, was just named the Mountain West's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Northern Illinois is on the other end of that spectrum — 3-9 last season, a new head coach in Rob Harley after Thomas Hammock left for the Seahawks, and an unresolved quarterback battle between Brady Davidson and Jalen Macon.

The health angle matters here. Alejado's ankle injury lingered through the 2025 season and into spring ball, where he sat out to let it fully heal, and he's said this offseason he's still out to prove himself healthy. If he's right, Hawai'i's high-scoring offense travels well against basically anyone. Northern Illinois, meanwhile, is breaking in either Davidson or Macon behind an offense that scored 21 points or fewer in 10 of its 12 games a year ago and was one of the least explosive passing attacks in the sport — only UMass was worse down the field.
