TLDR: Houston rallied past UCF while Kansas State had the week off to stew over a blown lead in Cincinnati. One of them leaves Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday, October 10 with a winning Big 12 record, and the other is chasing early.

No. 20 Houston (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) visits unranked Kansas State (3-1, 0-1) for the Wildcats' Big 12 home opener, with both teams relying on a dual-threat quarterback in Conner Weigman and Avery Johnson. Kansas State comes off a bye after letting a halftime lead slip at Cincinnati, where its run defense gave up 271 yards. Houston arrives off a 27-17 comeback over UCF, but without its kicker and with its receiving group thinned out. No betting board has posted for the game yet.

Houston Cougars
  • Scored 27 unanswered to beat UCF
  • Weigman ran in 2 TDs vs UCF
  • Took Texas Tech to a 2-point finish on the road
  • Kicker E. Noel out, undisclosed injury
  • 2 WRs and starting TE McGary all out
  • Short week vs a K-State team off a bye
Kansas State Wildcats
  • 2 weeks to prep after Cincinnati loss
  • O-line: 0 sacks allowed, 5.2 yards per carry
  • Johnson: 227 pass, 152 rush vs Tulane
  • Run defense gave up 271 yards at Cincinnati
  • Second-half turnover, red-zone misses blew 17-10 lead
  • QB Barnett, WR Lovett questionable; TE Anciaux out

This one comes down to the quarterbacks. Kansas State runs through Avery Johnson, who threw for 227 yards, ran for 152 and scored twice on the ground against Tulane. Nobody in program history had put up 200 passing and 150 rushing in the same game before that. Houston has Conner Weigman, who didn't need a big passing day against UCF: he went 15-of-26 for 171 yards and ran in 2 touchdowns himself. Both guys can hurt you with their legs, and that matters a lot for 2 defenses that have each been gashed on the ground.

Houston showed up to the UCF game shorthanded and still found a way. The Knights led 17-0 deep into the third quarter, and the Cougars then scored 27 straight to win 27-17. They did it without kicker E. Noel, whose undisclosed injury has kept him out. They're also missing wideouts J. Strozier Jr. and M. Tounkara and tight end L. McGary, so Weigman is throwing to a thin group. Kansas State has its own lineup questions. Receiver M. Lovett (arm) and quarterback B. Barnett (lower body) are both questionable for this game, tight end W. Anciaux is out with no timetable, and guard J. Pastore is done for the year.

Books haven't posted a full number yet, so the price is still open. On the field, the scheduling edge goes to Kansas State. The Wildcats get 2 full weeks between Cincinnati and their Big 12 home opener. Houston gets a normal week after a comeback that took everything it had.

That Cincinnati loss is the film Collin Klein's staff has been grinding on all bye week. Kansas State led 17-10 at the half. It opened the third quarter with a turnover and then a three-and-out, and Cincinnati scored twice to take the lead for good, 31-26. The Bearcats ran for 271 yards, and nearly 200 of them came on just 5 plays. Klein put it on missed gaps, poor eye discipline and missed tackles, and said his defense has to stop 'bleeding yards.' Houston's offense creates explosive plays, and that rush defense is the first thing Weigman will test.

Kansas State's offensive line gives the Wildcats a real case. It hasn't allowed a sack all season and is averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Houston's one loss was a 28-26 game at Texas Tech, so the Cougars have already been in a 2-point Big 12 road fight. This is their second conference road trip of the year. The red zone is where Kansas State came up short in Cincinnati, and Klein's group has had 2 weeks to fix missed blocks and reads down there.

Early forecasts for Manhattan show clear skies in the mid-80s with wind around 16 mph, which is a lot of breeze for a passing game, and a week-out forecast can still change. If the wind holds, Houston's kicker situation becomes a bigger problem. A close game where field goals decide it is not where you want to be with your regular kicker out.
