This is the last of North Texas's 4 non-conference games, and it has been a rough run. The Mean Green opened by getting beaten 52-16 at No. 6 Indiana. They answered with a 44-6 home win over UNLV, which looked like a real turn, then lost 49-35 at Texas State. As of Wednesday they are 1-2 under Brown. Saturday, September 26 is their last chance to sort things out before American play starts.

Houston Christian is 2-2 and doesn't arrive as a pushover by FCS standards. The Huskies opened by winning 34-28 at No. 19 Southeastern Louisiana, and quarterback Cutter Stewart went 10-for-18 for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns in that one, with Jamaal Hall II catching a 71-yard day that included a score. They also went 3-2 in their other 3 games in a way that tells you what they are: they scored 88 on NAIA Arkansas Baptist and lost 30-23 in overtime at Incarnate Word.

The number that matters most for Denton is 3. That's how many points Houston Christian scored in its only FBS game this season, a 31-3 loss at Rice. Rice is not Indiana. If the Huskies could barely move the ball there, the North Texas defense gets a much easier afternoon than the last 2 offenses it faced.

Still, North Texas's defense is the story of this game. Allowing 52 to a top-10 Indiana team is forgivable. Allowing 49 to a Sun Belt team a week later is the kind of thing a first-year staff has to answer for. On paper the UNLV game showed they can dominate someone. Brown needs a second game like it before conference play, and a clean 4 quarters against an FCS offense is the minimum.

The forecast calls for 89 degrees and cloudy skies in Denton with only an 8 mph wind, so weather won't keep anyone from throwing. The heat will matter more for depth, which is where an FBS roster usually pulls away from an FCS one in the second half. For context, Houston Christian went 2-10 last season (2025), and a program climbing out of that is exactly the kind of team that has trouble getting 60 minutes out of 2-deep against bigger bodies.

Watch the Mean Green's first 2 defensive series. If Stewart and Hall can hit an early shot the way they did at Southeastern Louisiana, the questions about the North Texas secondary from last week will come right back. If North Texas forces 3-and-outs the way it did against UNLV, this one gets out of hand early and the backups play the whole second half.
